This is the background I'm painting for the portrait, also WIP. Its low quality here btw.
Any thoughts? Most of you know what you're doing, unlike myself.

Wow, your artwork is amazing!
And nice character designs.
For the lions, I really like 4 and 2.

Your forms are solid; very solid. You're selling yourself way too short saying you don't know what you're doing.
The biggest issue I see with them is the contrast. I know there are a lot of people who suggest not using full whites or full blacks but you're only using roughly the middle half of the grayscale on your wip. It's making the image way muddier than it actually is.

Appreciate it! And thanks for pointing that out. I tried putting some colors over the painting in an overlay/hardlight layer with the low contrast portrait, and I just lost the detail.
Here is an update, and I took into account your comments about the contrast. I will have to tweak it around a bit before I'm satisfied with the levels, but it's looking better!
Another shot at my progress. I had to put this project on the back-burner for a little more. Should be back to it soon!

Something I started last night. Still trying to work out the basic composition.

This is a concept I'm working on for a woman's health group in Louisiana. Its the second painting I've worked on for their event, and this year they asked for a setting that people will recognize as cajun culture. The pelican is part of an animal band - these characters have been a recurring theme throughout the years in the paintings for the event.

I got one. Re gessoed some old canvases I did years ago and experimenting with colors and some dreams i've had. I took another pic a few minute ago i'll have up.

Everything looks great by itself but as soon as you put it together like this, it all seems "cut and pasted" I suggest you try and maybe keep it consistent somehow for example, render the alligators body more, and add more highlights to the characters where the ligth source is coming from. And shade how the characters influence eachother, for example the alligator blocks a lot of the light from everyone else.

Yeah I kind of noticed that too. This whole image is actually a concept for an acrylic version I will end up painting, so all the inconsistent lighting and shadows will be corrected. I worked off a few reference photos for each animal, hence the different lighting, etc. I suppose if i was smart I would have taken that into consideration and used colors and lighting directions independently of the references.

It's best to have the whole thing planned from the start, before you have to make major adjustments in the painting stage, but since you already noticed it, I say go ahead and finish the ref, and start painting, just keep those little things in mind for when you paint so it doesn't translate over to the real painting. Looking forward to seeing that :)

More practice!

Here is the finished painting. Took me WAY longer than anticipated. Overall, I think it came together pretty well considering the restrictions and direction I was given for this piece. I certainly need practice with traditional mediums, but I am satisfied with it.
I'm looking in to getting some prints done for a digital painting. Has anyone out there had experience ordering prints? What material and ink treatments do you use? Also, do you recommend a specific company? I've heard that iprintfromhome.com offers reliable service.
Really like your rendering, especially the animal drawings. They seem to have their own personalities somehow and that's really amusing. So far my favorite is the cray fish. Haha. I also like that portrait with the lion, seriously great stuff. You have an adept understanding of shadows and values which is always great to see. Keep posting art. I want to see more.
