YouTube changed the way they rank movies. Instead of just views, it's based on how long users will stay on your channel and watch multiple minutes of video.

This resulting in someone like Pewdiepie who produces really simple video game videos, with huge amounts of followers, who watch 15+ minute videos to skyrocket on youtube's search results.

But yeah this pretty much, he gets a lot of view time from his multiple uploads which his fans watch and perpetuate the "contention loop" in which he very easily makes the YT algorithm his bitch.

As to how it started, well, he's a good looking man who appears kind-hearted and plays things people like to watch. He's much loved by kids and teenage girls. Overall, he seems like a really nice person and I'm glad for him that he enjoys making other people laugh and loves his fan base. The man, though I've never met him, seems like a good guy, so I'm glad for him.

I'll admit I still watch his videos.

Back when I joined the fanbase (at around 38k) PewDiePie didn't force himself to keep talking and as a result most of what came out of his mouth was actually pretty funny, even though his grip of the English language was not quite as strong as it is now. His ventriloquist act with random objects was also pretty original and witty while it lasted.

Part of why I still watch is force of habit; the past few years I've had a solitary lifestyle and many days he was one of the only human voices I heard outside of music. Another part is because I think he has a really genuine personality even though he's putting on a show for his fans. I also have a soft spot for the old fanbase, which was a really warm and friendly community before it ended up flooded with little kids.

RWJ is another channel I've had my eye on for a very long time. Back when he had 50k subscribers he had a show called Capitol Hill Gangsta where he talked about politics, and he was pretty funny too. He took all of the CHG videos down when he applied for a new job and didn't want his employers finding politically charged content. Ever since his video quality has just continued to go down until he just started using the upload button like the post comment button.

Shane I never knew as a small channel but have always found him to have a really nice personality. He never has anything bad to say about any channels and generally seems pretty warmhearted. I went through a phase of subscribing and unsubscribing since I really like him but he doesn't have an ounce of creativity in him.
