Many of you on these forums have had debates with me about death and the after life, biology and living forever. While for some time I have explained my thoughts piece by piece, I have just watched a TED talk which sums up everything I had ever thought, using much more beautiful language than I.I encourage you to watch this, listen and post your thoughts or comments for dissuasion.

The one thing, however, that Stephen doesn't touch on is reproduction. The study of epigenetics tells us that out experiences while we are living, have physical repercussions on heritable genes that we may or may not pass on to a new generations of humans. Your life and the life of your ancestors, the lives of the species that evolved into your ancestors, the people and things that influence you every day,all physically live on in you.
The book metaphor is unfinished. If anything a single life, a single mind, is like a letter. A couple letters make a word, words make sentences and many sentences make books.
And I suspect by the time the book is over, it will have profound effects on the universe in which we live.

Why not? You didn't exist for an eternity beforehand (yes, I'm implying that time flows infinitely both ways, not just forward), why not go ahead and not exist for an eternity afterward? You would never know that you would have otherwise existed because, you wouldn't exist. Unless you're a god-king or a trillionaire, you'd have to be completely insane to not choose to not exist.

Do we awake from a machine?
Do we ascend to a heavenly/hellish place based on our souls?
Do we become our own gods, and rule over a new domain?
Do we dream again, and choose a new existence into which our past lives intertwine with our new ones?

The list goes on. While we endure the trials of life, we learn many lessons. I welcome death, but I will defy it.

May my trails grant me a better appreciation for life itself, and whether I fail or succeed in finding truth, only then I give death permission to take me away.
For now, death stalks me. Waiting for a chance to strike. Many can't wait for me to choke on my last breath, many will want to help me defy whatever kills me. Only I can make this change. Must stay vigilant, strong, and most of all, hopeful.
This is my way, I may choose to change this anytime. For in this existence, there are many thinkers, many who will prove me right and wrong.

Okay, I just watched the video. He made a couple of good points, but he was a bit off about the "mind uploading". Funny enough, I was reading into this the other day.

The way you need to look at a mind upload is the same way you would look at a DVD and a .mp4. You have the DVD, which is the real copy, but you can also put it into a computer and copy that information. Absolutely everything will be the same, and they will both "act" the same way. However the copy that's in the computer is not the DVD. The same way your "uploaded mind" wouldn't be you, it would be like a computer clone of you.

Science does have something for immortality though, although none of us will live to see it. It relates to mind uploading in a way, and the most known version I can think of is "the brain in the vat". One thing he mentioned that was true (not saying it's the only true thing) was that we need our brains to stay alive.

There are multiple ways to do this. For starters, they could remove your brain from your body and put it into a robotic body that will never die.

Or, the much more likely option, they would have to replace your brain bit by bit. Atom by atom, until your original squishy organic brain has been completely replaced with a new and improved brain.

Now, all that being said, I know personally, I am going to die. I know everyone I love is going to die. It's a depressing thought, and I personally don't know how to make myself feel better about it. But if someone wants to believe a god will save them, or science will save them, who the fuck is this guy to try to tell them any different?
