Have you ever looked at a full HD image and thought to yourself: "Damn, that looks just like real life!" And then wondered, "huh, I wonder how massive the resolution would have to be to look EXACTLY like real life?" Well don't worry your pretty little head over it because I did the thinking for us. Apparently the human eye can see the equivalent to approximately 576 Megapixels. Compare that to your oh so great 1920x1080p that only has 2.1 MP. That's 271.3 TIMES as clear.

Just how many pixels are we talking about here? Let's do the math shall we? There are 1,048,576 pixels in a single Megapixel, therefore you are seeing the equivalent to 603,979,776 pixels every time you stare at a wall (feel free to say this when someone catches you staring off into space so you look like one of those autistic geniuses like Rain Man).

I find this interesting as it kinda puts our successes in technology in perspective and humbles us to know that what we consider to be fantastic resolution doesn't even touch the surface of what our body is capable of and that even the highest resolution screen to date only sports 5.6 MP. Now granted of course, other tech does far out perform humans in terms of resolution, after all there are cameras that can capture images with Gigapixels of visual information and billions of actual pixels, of course though, those are only still images and the ones that do reach into the gigapixels take HOURS (some times days) to fully process a single photo, meanwhile, the human eye can fully process up to 12-15 images every second. Which is why its more fair to compare the human eye to a Camcorder. Either ways, our bodies are pretty powerful eh?

This doesn't take into account that only the center of your field of vision is sharp enough to discern fine details. Without the the fovea, daytime vision is useless. This also means that most of those "megapixels" are being wasted.

It's like 12 pixels less than the display resolution of the newest iMac.

It also depends of how far you are from the screen.

Remind me to never use a question as a title again. Because some people can't resist ignoring the OP. Despite the fact that I answer the question IN the OP. I was presenting the question, not asking it. At any rate that's the same link I used. Like I said, in terms of Megapixels, its 576 as our full power viewing something up close at an 120 degrees.
