No, I almost always play as a female character.

I feel like there are too few female heroines in video games. Also, some games have romance sidequests and I think they're more interesting if you play as a female.

If there is no main default name and the character is male then yes, I usually give them my own name. Otherwise I often choose my girlfriend's name or a girl's name that I really like.

Frankly though, I don't care that much for the name. In most games NPCs don't address you by your real name anyway.

I know some games let you choose an approximate age, which changes the face a little.

Like in The Elder Scrolls' games a young character would have a very smooth face with light toning and an old character's face would be somewhat darker and more wrinkled.

In most RPGs I try to make a "cast" of people. Like a group that I imagine to simply wonder the open world in search of adventure, each having their own back-story and role. My FIRST character is generally male with one of the more common/powerful attributes in the game maxed out (b/c that's the one I will probably be going through the whole game with), then a female character either stealth or archer/sniper (depending on whether its fantasy or sci-fi) then another male that focuses on a whole different skill set and then if there is any other play style I have not gone through, I'd make a random character that looks vastly different than the others and have that guy go through the obscure skills/attributes.
