Help Beginning a Series 2013-12-01 18:24:41 Reply

Hello there. I have taken an interest in animation and am planning to create a series of my own. Though I will probably begin in a year due to my being very busy right now, I want to make sure that I have a clear idea of what to do when the time comes. :) I have a couple of questions for those who are more experienced than I am and thank everyone in advance for any answers and tips :D

I'm planning to create this series with Adobe Flash in an anime style. I would like to use voice actors and music and have a couple of queries regarding the use of audio. I would like to hold auditions for the characters through email or through videos online and I am planning to get the recordings of the voices before I begin the animation so that the lip syncing feels smoother and the characters feel more natural.

I was wondering if voice actors would need to hear the other actors in order to act and, if so, if there are any methods or software that you would recommend that allow them to do so.

How exactly should I use music in my series? Should I use professional music, as in music that has been published officially? If so, would I be able to do this without getting problems with copyright infringement? If I use original music, should I get the music first and then animate the scene, or animate the scene and send it to the composer with my thoughts on what I would like for the music?

Do you know any voice actors or composers that would work without pay? I'm planning to spend as little money as possible. How should I give directions in how I want the character or music to sound?

As I am very new to animation (meaning that I have little to no experience) what fps rate do you think would be suitable? I don't want the animation to be too choppy, but I also don't feel confident enough to have 32 frames per second in my first project. How do you think I should practice my animation? Are there any techniques or tips you would like to share? Also, are there any good references that you think would be helpful?

I would like the series to have a fantasy theme with interesting characters and a good plot. Are there any tips or links that you could share?

Finally, how do you think I should advertise my series? I'm not too sure about how to become successful through social networking sites and I don't want to buy advertisements. Should I release teasers and trailers during the development of the series or after I have completed it?

While I am certainly not confident about how this project will go due to my complete lack of experience, I will try my best :) Thank you very much for any answers that I receive and I apologise for the long post :)

Here's my advice:

1. Write all your scripts for all the episodes in your series (or at least the first season) out in advance. That way you can get your voice actors to record everything and won't have to worry about waiting between episodes. Also, it will free them up for supplemental stuff you may need.

2. Get the voices first if you can, before you start storyboarding/animating. If you are very descriptive in your script about what's happening, you shouldn't really need to swap voice files between actors except in special cases like if 2 characters are saying something at the same time.

3. Don't use licensed music, or even royalty free music. Get original music from artists on here and soundcloud. It will make you life a whole lot easier in the long run.

4. do a google search for Voice Acting Alliance and Voice Acting Club. Most of the VA artists on those sites will work for free.

5. You are either going to have to do some preliminary tests to figure out your frame rate or just figure it out on the fly while your working on the first episode.

6. At this point, you shouldn't really worry about advertising untill you have at least 1 episode finished. Just focus on getting the work done first, advertising and all that stuff is easy in comparison.

Well, a lot of jobs are available, like voice acting, composing, sound effects, animation and writing. Which do you think you would be most suitable for? I was planning to do most of the animation and writing by myself, but if you're willing to help that would be great :D

I would love to animate but I do not have software :( I have experience and I could get the trial but My tablet is missing the cord...so I guess I could voice act.

Alright :) I'll make sure to contact you when the auditions have begun, though that will probably be a very long time from now.

Welcome to NewGrounds AcidicOstrich. Whenever I work on a project and I want to make sure my characters are original and (as in avoiding too many cliches) I've often referred to sandra-miller.com and HollyLisle.com They're both authors who've written books and have tips on their sites for other writers. Additionally Holly Lisle sends out regular emails to people who want to improve their writing skills. Of course, they often write about how to write a book, and animation is different, but I think a lot of the same ideas apply. I hope those two sites help. Also, maybe google screenwriting tips, that could help as well.

not necessarily to add a music before animating or after unless you want the music to go with the animation then you can do the music before animating !

Thank you very much for the websites! They're very helpful and I'll probably spend a lot of time looking through them. I've also found a lot of articles and videos on screenwriting :D

I got a question, what are the characters? You got to layout your script, characters and stuff. Making a series is hard work, you need to go full fledge if you start.

If I were you, I'd not bother explaining such sort of stuff.
If a person does not understand that by himself/herself, then that means he/she has no experience doing such things, and you're wasting your brea..your keyboard, typing that.
And if you swing that way, you might as well write a large tutorial on how to make animated series, or post a link to such tutorial, saying something like: "I've noticed you didn't mention script, characters or any technical details, so I assume you don't have experience making any series yet. If so, you may find this tutorial helpful <link>."
Now that would be a really good reply to have in any thread.

I would like to offer my services as either an amateur animator, or an amateur writer.
I'm not bad, I'm just not the best of Newgrounds c:
