Abolish Food Stamps/EBT

seriously.

Foodstamps subsidies most of these supermarkets as the schlubs that run into to get doritos and frozen pizza on their gubbermint cards wouldnt be eating that if they didnt have it availible. Sure, they might head to mcdonalds or something but eating that crap everyday would get old real fast.

Or not....

but atleast it would save a ton of money

I also believe in a fantasy world where people in the US don't starve or go hungry

You're right though, letting them starve is better than letting them live healthy while having other people that abuse the system. Also simply reforming the system instead of abolishing it isn't an option, because dicks

Yeah its a problem.

One that maybe can be fixed if we put more emphasis and shame on it, but people are scared to do that.

Ah well, Id rather live in a fat nation then a starving one

The welfare system is pretty broken, and people take advantage of it, but that doesn't mean we should abolish it.

That's a good point and should be kept in mind during this sort of discussion.

please....

you scale back the gov't and suddenly everybody's dying in the streets. Gimme a break. You have charity, you have low cost food, you still have fast food. People can grow their own crap, start food co-ops and farmers markets and every other thing that went on prior to Johnson's Great Society BS.

Charity still takes money from people who don't need it, and it can be mooched off of, just like the welfare system. And there's no guaranty people would donate enough.

Supply and demand. If everyone buys low cost food, it won't be low cost for very long.

:People can grow their own crap, start food co-ops and farmers markets and every other thing that went on prior to Johnson's Great Society BS.

So let me get this straight. People with no money will group together, grow a bunch of food, split it up, and somehow become financially independent? First of all, we don't know if we have enough land to give to ALL the people who need food. Second, what about all the people who are financially dependent because of disabilities? How will they farm? Third, even if we have enough land to give to the poor, starting farms on all that land would cost tons of taxpayer dollars. Those are only three issues with your plan. I'm sorry, but it just wouldn't work.

It's not just an issue of eating habits, it's a combination of things.
Sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy food abundance, lots of stuff.

The promotion of exercise and work outs is the most important thing here, a man who works out on a regular basis could eat the exact same diet as a morbidly obese man and it do nothing to him in the long run (you know, except for the heart disease even if he is doing cardio) and then, people would eat better because they'd feel like shit if they ate bad crap and tried running...or it would backfire and they'd give up cardio for food (but I think that would extend to only the very obese and unwilling). That's how I use to eat, I haven't been working out very often lately, and thus have been trying to cut back more, its kinda hard though.

But you know, I think I understand the mentality of the obese a little better because of it. I use to run a mile almost every day followed by core followed by weights, and now...now that sounds real fucking tough and too much effort. I have no doubt I'll get off my ass eventually but I have a feeling it'll be a slow start. But that's just it, once I start, I can keep it up for weeks before a snag. Its getting into the mentality, you got to WANT it and want to push yourself. Giving people the mentality is the absolute MOST important thing, eating healthy helps a lot but people got to have a reason for it. And working out is a great reason to eat better, so I say exercise exercise EXERCISE and get your ass on that tread, on that street/track, and get to work. So the real question is: How? There's plenty of "health" movements and the media certainly loves promoting it, so I guess just get involved locally with charity runs and shit, I guess. Promote farm foods and such.

And remember:

YOU GOTTA FEEL THE BURRRRNNNN!

fuck, I might get up and do a couple right now..............nah fuck it, pass the chips. *munch munch munch*

There was an article on a senator (I believe from Florida) who wanted to restrict Food Stamps so that they couldn't be used to get foods above a certain fat/calorie count so that the obesity rate amongst the poor was cut back (since processed foods are among the cheapest but also most fattening and thus, the reason why obesity is so rampant amongst them). And I thought it was a good plan because the kids of the poor need vegetables, not generic brand cheetos. But I guess the majority of the poor are fairly...uninformed, and had it out with the article in the comments section. Arguing "healthy" food was too expensive.

Of course that's not true though, they're just looking at all these name-brand "health" foods marketed at middle class woman who feel they've let themselves go in supermarkets. But do you know how long a 5lb bag of rice and a pound of beef can last a family of 4? Or a bag of lentils + a couple tomatoes and a head of lettuce? Over a week, all items cost under $10. You could very easily feed your family for at or under $20 a week.It won't taste great unless you're good with spices, and you'd have to rotate left overs every couple days, but its very possible and that's just the extreme. You can eat for very cheap and healthy simply off of vegetables, fruits and boxed meals (gotta read the nutrition labels first though). But It's just a little harder than cracking open a bag of chips so therefore, too hard all together.

These are even cheaper:
http://www.cheapcooking.com/index.htm

Ways exist to cut obesity in the lower income brackets, however, getting them to use them is a very different story.

just cus you led it to water...

Something needs to be causing them to rise, so what is it?

I live in a very health conscience city, so I don't really understand whatever you're saying. The majority of girls my age here are between 90-130 pounds and a height of 5'3-5'7. Pretty average weight to me.

Yea, that sure must be the reason.

I wasn't even being sarcastic, it really is the reason.

We produce and import an absurd amount of food, way more than we could ever need, and so many Americans just stuff themselves senseless.

I could go grab some food stats if you wanted. We have so much food, that even with millions of fatties eating as much as they can, we throw away enough food in 1 week to feed several African countries for a year.

ironically the disease which is obesity probably stems more from that a lot of americans don't exercise enough than that they eat too much . . . active people are seldom fat even if they stuff themselves with deep fry. the inactivity can be linked back to people spending too much time on the computer or in front of the tv watching reality shows & sitcoms or playing video games. a healthy mind in a healthy body lol

I looked at some of the food in the south.
If I lived there, I would be fat within weeks. We don't have shit in the north, just clam chowder and clam cakes.
Apparently the lifestyle there is slower, too. Maybe that contributes to it.

Give me some advantages on anorexia.

As for the future, I think the obesity will decrease. There won't be enough cattle to support the fast food restaurants because there will be too many people on Earth. Breeding cattle also increases the percent of methane in the air, which gives a plus to destroying the ozone layer. Insects are the way to go.
