No word should ever be banned. If anything, the n-word should be accessible to everyone. It was once an anti black slur, but now it's used by those of African descent as a word of greeting and comradery. It's all a matter of context and perception, so it's very tricky. It does boggle my mind a bit why black people continue to use it, because only they can? Possibly, not too sure.

I get where you're coming from OP, but 'white trash' is barely comparable, that term didn't segregate a race of people for hundreds of years.

It is. I personally don't mind the n-word - but of course, I'm not black, so I wouldn't know how it feels.
I have a lot of black friends that claim it's not offensive to them, because it's something people associate with slavery and in Europe we're confronted less with it because we don't really have a significant part that you can compare to, say, the conservative South. I just don't say it, because it makes some people mad pissed, unlike other classic swear words.

I got a thread about it up in Politics, you know, if you want a serious debate about it. In NG, Tom Fulp finds it too offensive and is now on the side of moderate censorship (he recently posted a thread about how he will up the censoring of flashes), so it doesn't matter how good a case anyone makes against it, he won't lift it.

In society, however, if people are using the word in a non-offensive way, it shouldn't matter how many times they say it. Anyways, I've written more about it on the other thread. There's plenty of points of its usage and against the outdated version (as outdated as "gay" meaning happy).
