So far it has been confirmed that R2D2 WILL make a return to the series.

Instead of it taking place after the original trilogy, it should have been set in the old republic times.

There's already a lot of comics, novels, video games, etc. that cover the old republic and while there are books about the post-empire times the canon of these is dubious as is the quality. I'm personally kind of tired of the past and I want to see the future of Star Wars.

Well JJ Abrams is the director I think (correct me if im wrong) and he did a decent job on the Star Trek movies.
