They creep me out. Then again, so does the idea of making nonbelief a religion. OK, I get atheism. But...turning your nonbelief into a belief system? Huh?

You're not wrong, but raising 800k for global Sunday assemblies is a long way to go for a joke. Even if the founders weren't entirely serious about it, plenty of the people going seem to be.

Regardless of comedic affairs, that's just lunacy. Pure, fantastical lunacy.

Seems like a pretty good idea!
i grew up with an atheist family in my neighborhood. They were all absolute geniuses. Artists, musicians, a writer, a doctor, a very wealthy engineer, and a world-renowned published environmentalist. (Good looks, too, it's almost unfair how much good fortune they have) The entire mansion was essentially a six story library-museum! People like that are few and far between in the theist Churches I've been to. It would be nice to meet thousands of people like them.
Just an 02er.

They've successfully confirmed every stereotype about atheism. Well done.

so either you look at it as a bunch of atheists in a church of non belief
or a bunch of smug people who think they're smarter than everyone else making fun of people who are part of a religion....
so basically they're either really stupid or really stupid jerks?

it was bound to happen seeing as how all atheists deep down know that they're wrong . . . in the quiet of their own minds 99.99% of all atheists pray that god forgives them for denying him & for putting on a front lol

The idea doesn't seem too bad, they just need to think up another name for the gathering than a church, it feels like churches are reserved for religious activities. Atheism isn't religion...

Capitalism, my friend. They'll be a market to pretty much anyone if there is a market for that group. Now why is this surprising again?
You know what would be really neat? These things actually being noticeable.

Nobody's selling t-shirts, the people who set this up want to encourage the community spirit that churches promote - without having the ties of religion.

Yeah, I get the impression that this started off as a silly joke, but now that it turns out there's money to be made...
I can understand this though:
Sunday Assembly — ... — taps into that universe of people who left their faith but now miss the community church provided
I've heard that people who say farewell to the church tend to feel a little isolated, so this might be an alternative.

All you funny bastards saying 'atheism is now a religion lolz'; I ain't going to these atheist megachurches or paying any attention to what they say, I guess I'm still in the biggest sect of atheism - the 'we are not a religion' sect

Are there still "tithes" and "offerings"? Are they referred to as "donations"?
This just seems like a plan to make money from insecure Atheist.
Just like Christian Mega-churches are making a profit from insecure Christians.
Skynet is upon us.
