I don't know if anybody on here notice, but last week, South East Asia and especially Philippines got hit by Typhoon Haiyian. With the max sustained wind of 315 km/h, the typhoon was strong enough to cause landfall. With the overkill power, it caused over 10,000 of people dead (Filipino gov est).

What will you do if this monster (or a hurricane that as strong) ever hit your region/city/town?

Probably be escorted to a safe zone, though I don't live near any water.

It hasn't received nearly the attention I feel it should have, from the media. Most scientists and meteorologists are confident this was the strongest storm to ever exist on this planet, and 10,000 is a horrible number. We made it through Katrina and Rita....I cannot imagine this coming my way.
I'm about 100 miles inland, but I think I'd still leave if this presented here.

Every time I look at photos of this storm--the eye in particular-- that is some insane stadium wall effect on the inside. Just wow.

Just to be clear, this storm is suspected to be the strongest storm ever recorded since we've been recording storms with satellites, which isn't all that long. So there may have been stronger storms 50+ years ago that we never knew about. There has almost certainly been stronger storms in the past. Stronger storms have also probably hit land, but back then there may not have been anyone there to record it, report about it, etc.

Also a lesser typhoon hit Myanmar in 2008 killing at least 138,000 people.

That reminded me of Katrina aftermath a lot. It probably going to take months to clean the mess and even years just to rebuild it.

Chances are certain religious organizations will organize relief efforts, I remember my church brought me along to New Orleans when Katrina swung in, but my mother helped pay for that no doubt, and yeah I don't do churches anymore soooo yeah.

to put it into persepective, the typical take off speed of an airliner is between 250km/h to 300km/h. if the winds were that strong, even an empty boeing 747 jet would be airborne.
haiyan is a very intense typhoon, but i doubt it is the strongest typhoon ever recorded. its size was relatively small compared with typhoon tip. the windfield was concentrated to a small region and i don't think haiyan contained nearly enough energy to top the list. the actual maximum wind speed near center of haiyan have not been recorded as well.

in principle, modern buildings are designed to withstand 3-second gusts of up to 250 km/h but apparently the super typhoon was capable of producing wind speeds higher than this limit.
i would probably take shelter in hospital/stadium or even underground car park. shorter buildings are less prone to collapse than taller buildings.
there is virtually nothing those victims could do to save their lives. they have no time or resources to evacuate.

I'm pretty sure they were just supplying a hypothetical as means of starting a discussion; quit arguing for the sake of arguing.
