It has been a busy work season with low to no downtime for art. I've lost a few skills here and there.. that's what happens when you stop drawing. I've been able to peruse the forum now and again, though, and damn have you hauled ass in a short period of time. I'm rooting for you, always have.

I only truly realized this about three days ago, but gesture drawing is most efficiently practiced as an exercise in abstraction of story and motion. In other words the goal should never be to capture contour or likeness, but rather things like flow, volume, balance, and weight. It's okay if the drawing doesn't even look human - the emphasis is on the flow of the pose.

Of course it's still important to keep in mind the most important structure of the body, the rib cage, spine (VERY important!), pelvis, head, arms and legs. However all that matters is that they're taken into account, whether they're drawn as a single line or with several lines indicating volume is a case-by-case decision. The body has many curved lines naturally - exaggerate these! What would a drawing made with only C-curves look like?

I hope you don't find this discouraging, but rather as a fresh perspective on the gesture drawing itself - as I said I only found out about this a few days ago so I still have a long way to go on this myself!

Wait, so just do all my gestures using curves!? :0
No not discouraging at all, but kinda fun. xD
K, I'll try this tomorrow!

A scanner isn't necessarily what you need for your linework at the moment. By the looks of it you're padding your lines a lot, you need to have more confidence in each stroke and get a single definite and clear line as opposed to the uneven scratchy lines you have right now. Alternatively you can use a ruler since you mostly have straight lines here.
A good technique to use, if you don't already know it, is to draw longer lines by moving your whole arm from the shoulder as opposed to drawing from the wrist or elbow.
Hope that helped in some capacity.
Also what kind of pens are you using to ink?

Oh, I'm using an ink brush pen..
Y'kno, also the ones used for calligraphy.
I think I'm just holding the pen wrong. Really just experimenting and practicing what's the best way to do it.
If I press too hard, the lines get thick. That is why I'm so scared using my shoulders and making a fast swift movement. D:

And a bunch of random head doodles...yet again.
I drew this in an awkward position so most of the head perspectives are kinda messed up.
But then again, I would probably still botch it up with a comfortable position...

Just leaving out my thoughts...

Well, it's happening again. Too busy to draw.. :c
As maybe some of you know, I'm really not that busy finishing high school and still waiting for the next school year for college.
And I'm taking computer science as my course on hopes to fulfill my dream of creating games.
In the meantime, I spent my free time in learning how to draw, not only for the art skills, but to maybe improve my creativity or to create something entirely on my own.

A week ago, my friend Daker invited me to learn program with him.
I accepted, and now I'm learning how to program.
I had this digital books given to me by my bro-in-law (he works programming) and just really did not touch it until now.

And I've come to that time of me again being too preoccupied with something to draw.
I just try to prioritize something I think is better for me to learn.
And because of drawing daily these past few months, I kinda feel guilty not doing my drawrings.
Ugh..

Anyway, my new schedule would probably go:
Wake up.
Do Chores.
Study Java.
If there's time, draw anything at least an hour.

In a more positive note, I think I've really improved since one year ago..
It's almost my post's 1 year anniversary.. yey!
And the doodles I did above is something I could NEVER do a year ago. xD
*happy*

I've taught myself java but haven't messed with it in a while...its probably been a month now...i almost completed a book but stopped reading it. if your interested i can send you a link to a few java books i've read and another link to a 30min video on java thats good to watch after you've spent a good amount of time submerged in the java language.

I won't probably need the books that much, but the video sounds interesting!
Just PM meh with the links of the books and such. That would be a lot of help!
Thanks! :D

I can definitely tell you're getting better and more confident in your perspective and expressions (mainly faces) Also, kudos for doing the gesture studies. I'm terrible at procrastinating art studies. :P

I don't know about the perspective part since I still use reference to get it right.

Well, somebody has improved vastly from their early, fan art days. It's good to see that you have developed your illustration skills and are now moving towards working on a graphic narrative. Another step towards what I can see making a good comic series or even used an animatic for a cartoon.

I would say that you should now spend some time on one image/strip. Spend time on the writing a narrative if it's a strip first before you begin to draw and then get some colour in there, working towards a nice finished piece. It always looks good to have a portfolio of finished work.

Keep it up mate.

Yeah, about that.
Still not really sure what to do with my characters and that comic.
I'm still not sure if I'm going to continue creating the comic with the characters I made.
But, one thing for sure is I'm definitely gonna use my characters.

Right now, I'm just trying that to improve my inking skills, but not really color it yet.
Also, I need a scanner and my tablet is really acting weird...
And sadly, can't afford both.

Keep it up mate.

Will do! :D
