Apparently he has two stories... that the gun accidentally discharged and that he shot her thinking she was breaking into his home.

He felt bad for her, opened the door to see how he could help, then the shotgun went off in her face.

So, again, why was she driving around an affluent neighborhood for two hours after a car crash? Why did she approach a house looking for help at that point? Reading through this all you can find some interesting information, such as the fact that it took 4 days for this information to be investigated by authorities. Wherein her body had to be found on a 50 year old man's porch. And the gun in question was a shotgun wounding her in the head
