during the origanal trilogy they lied about lukes father to keep him under control and were helping a terrorist group. theres no proof the empire mistreeted anyone infact the only over the top thing it ever did was the alderon thing .alderon of course was funding the rebelion a terrorist group which could be seen as an act of war.
if you take the expanded universe as cannon then the death star was intended to destroy an outside threat which could take over an entire planet and assimilate all native life rather quikly which would nessesitate the destruction of a planet a tactic that the jedi would never approve .since the jedi have future sight powers and since as force ghosts this power would have been stronger they would have been aware of it so they could have mentioned mentioned it to luke that he might need the death star but since they dident it can be assumed that the left that part out because this weapon violates there beleifs thus causing its destruction . although the threat mentioned was deafeated it involved an even higher death toll then jusst blowing up planets way to go jedi
ps im not a big enough star wars nerd to remember anything from the expanded universe
Well it's true the Jedi aren't necessarily good guys, but the opposing side definitely seems to have worse moral values than they do. It's pretty much like any war in the world, neither side would fight if they didn't believe they were doing the right thing, and you have to side with someone...
It's basically black and gray morality, it's not just Star Wars, there's a list here which has neither side really good but one is worse then the other.
In the originals they are poorly written, as it doesn't really elaborate on the beliefs of either side very much. The Clone Wars somehow managed to write them even worse.
I'd say that from what I can see from the expanded universe, neither side is "Good" or "Evil", but the Jedi are idealistic and the Siths are realists. The Jedi fight for what they believe is right, the Sith fight because they know it's what'll bring them power.
Perspective is everything when it comes to naming the heroes. Warcraft III is a great example when you study the character Arthas. Sure, he slaughters an entire village, but he did so to prevent the spread of a terrible plague of undeath.
Those who do not learn from the mistakes of their past are doomed to repeat them.
