Modern Intolerance

These past hundred or so years. we've gotten a lot more tolerant of minorities, but have regressed significantly in accepting people for who they are. Someone today could lose their whole career or stand a scandal on TMZ if they were found sleeping around with hookers (Beethoven, Nietzsche), marrying their own cousin (Edgar Allen Poe), or if they were found to be schizophrenic (Nikola Tesla).

We see examples of talented people today who have taken tremendous falls for the trivial, unrelated things (Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson), and I really can't help wondering if I'm the only person that feels so constricted to live in today's society.

Well being within the eyes of the public at a point in time where you can exchange information in the blink of an eye will definitely have it's drawbacks. If you fuck up, people will know and then they'll talk about it as if it's actual news.

There's much more judgement of personal character these days for sure.

Considering that we live in a 24/7 news culture with the CNNs and the TMZs of the world, it's hard to keep any secrets or any dirty laundry around for public figures, and with the media being cynical as they are, they have the power and influence to knock any public figure down, and possibly ruin them for life.

Also, public attitudes in general change over time and what is and isn't considered acceptable by them. Once you lose the benefit of the doubt of the people, it is hard, if not impossible to get back to their good graces again.

It's not so much intolerance as obsession with trivial details in the lives of celebrities. People are paying too much attention to the lives of celebrities and politicians and concerning themselves with things that don't have any effect on the public in any way.

And for the people talking about Michael Jackson saying "BEING A RAEPIST IS NOT TRIVIAL!" You should know that Michael Jackson was demonized for many things beyond that, regardless for whether or not you believe he is guilty. The media took it far beyond that trial and tried to make him into something that he wasn't.

Then they all did a 180 when he died and talked about what a great person he was so that they could feel less guilty about what they did before.
