3.93 / 5.00 4,634 ViewsI am a musician who is looking to collaborate with others in a few months to create animated music videos. I have my own studio and I have a license to publish the works on itunes, google play, and other entertainment outlets. I would like to give a collaborator an incentive pay up front and give them a percentage of the profit that was made from the commission made. I was just wondering what the animators thought the average that is given to animator up front is before starting on a commission? I would like a honest answer. I work two jobs and go to school as of current and am trying to invest as much as I can into this so that making music videos and and other types of media will be my main source of income. I need all the advice and help I can get.

Edit:
I would like to make a correction. I would give 20-30% profit for album artwork and 50% for an animation for the music.

ive been told, from a professional they charge $200-10,000 per minute, but if your only after a "internet cartoon" quality one, which ranges from crap to near pro (decent being something like cyanide and happiness but with decent artwork, then so long as you storyboard it, ide say many will happily work for under $100. heck, ide do it for rights to monetize the vid on my youtube account, or to get 20-50% on such monetization plus 10-20 off the music or whatever you deem fair, however, im not that great, so you probably wouldnt want what i can offer, espeically since i cant really do the "art" side of things. though it really depends again on whether you storyboard the song. provide concept art, and so on.
thats just me. but offer a one time payment of like $300 and provide a storyboard and be specific on your duration, you might be able to get 1-3 animations out of it, but dont ask any professionals, they charge mondo moolah. i offered a guy $500 to do a couple animations for me, he turned me down and told me it was actually an insult what i was offering.

its really all up to the animator. but a realistic number would be anywhere from 100 to 300 for an upfront payment. or also (what i do) get half up front and get the later half at the end. its a down payment that kinda gives us animators assurance that this is legit. (we get lots of flakers). honestly the "half now, half later" is what i think is the best way to work. because you can discuss price with the animator and once that is settled you can cut in in half for the up front payment. you really have to factor in what YOU want, what they think, deadline, syncing, and the back and fort interaction between the two of you.
hope this helps man :D
