Racist people? Racist animals!

On the NPR news today I heard a report on racist animals. Apparantley, K-9 units bite African Americans and Latinos, but almost never caucasian people. This year, LA K-9 unit bites were exclusively distributed among the two largest minority groups in America, from January to June.

Just how much of the incidents are handler competencey, versus animal instinct, is a matter of discussion.

Do you believe in racist animals? Or do you have another explanation?

My mom used to have a dog that was afraid of black people. I heard dogs pick up on the cues from their owners [might be true, my mom is kinda racist] but I think it was just scared since it never seen a black man before

Wasn't there an episode of King Of The Hill like that? He hated the plumber so the dog bit him but the plumber was black so everyone thought Hank was a racist.

Without reading the article, my impression is that maybe the K-9 unit dogs have had more altercations with black individuals in the past, and react instinctively based on past experiences.

What about in a more simplistic fashion? In a sense, survival of the fittest is pure racism, surviving simply because your species is better than another, which requires no thought process.

The animal could recognize the physical differences between the handler, or normal people it associates with, and the individuals in question. Recognizing the difference and interpreting it as a dangerous thing is not outside the realm of animal comprehension.

I've also heard that because of how dog's eyesight works they might react negatively to people that have dark skin.

i spent a lot of time with a white family who kept around 10+ dogs, the family themselves weren't even slightly racist and had a black maid, yet every single dog would react with hostility whenever a black person walked by their house. they even employed a few black men that would come by every day or so, yet they were always greeted with barking and if they raised their voice inside the house the dogs would go ape shit.

it all comes down to the animal's experience with people, if they spent their entire lives around white people then they will definitely view black people as strange and possibly a threat.
