About being human beings... 2013-09-20 16:28:31 Reply

I don't believe I'm violating any rules here (as I respect them and try not to break them), not trying to be hateful, and hoping this doesn't turn into one of those threads where these people "shitpost", but I want people to think about something here.

As human beings, we've been given free will (limited by government but freedom of opinions in America to an extent). However, why is it that we have these people who shove these things down our throats like religion? We're not hurting anyone. Openly, I admit to be a Christian, but I respect people's beliefs as long as they aren't being an inconsiderate human being. Truthfully, I don't like posting on the forums but I want to get more involved with the community, but we have a bunch of people here who bash the people for trying to be helpful, it's almost like a "whats the point of saying this" situation. So I end up not really enjoying it.

Here we have people posting about how "terrible" the mods are or how homosexuality is a disease, or calling someone out. Quite frankly, that is disgusting. It's like you tell someone something insightful then they talk to you like you threatened to kill their family like they say something like "you're stupid go die in a fire". This is all nothing new as we all well know, but I figured someone should post the thought, "what's the point of posting something if you aren't going to be helpful"? So how is this post helpful? Just thought it would be some nice food for thought, but to those who don't care it's a waste of time of course, but I don't expect everyone to get the point.

TL;DR: Sometimes, some people in this community make it really unenjoyable to post here. But with that said, I do enjoy some threads with the insightful people. Why not be more helpful like that? This will probably attract the crazies i mentioned, but ffs, be a decent human being, and not a supremacist.

Thoughts?

So, what you're saying is that most of the threads in General go way over your head.

I don't know if this is a recent development or if I'm just getting older, but I guess I can agree that I've definitely been starting to notice people just being senselessly nasty and mean to each other on here. Not even trolling, trolling is fine when it's done right. Just people taking advantage of the anonymity of the Internet to say really vile, often racist, sexist and homophobic shit to other people.

I get that to a certain extent that's sort of par for the course on a site like this, but I still find the prevalence of this behavior kind of odd. Especially considering the fact that we're such a small, insular community, so everyone is kind of familiar with each other; it's not like this is a random comments section on a news article.

Like, what the fuck guys. Come on.

I'll admit some things go over my head but i know too well when someone is being a dick in a thread, it's just annoying more than anything. It's usually why I don't post here except on rare occasion even though I've been a member SINCE 2006, but with the kind of people on here, unless it's a "sensible thread" with the more educated folks, one word: nope.

That's a valid statement but shoving things down someone's throat is lack of respect and consideration. it's like "hey, want cancer? you have no choice!". Choice, is the key word, and free will. People should respect that and not force themselves on others.

I see what you mean but I'm just saying, out of all the years I've been here, I just wish it was more enjoyable to post the things I'd want to post but usually I don't unless I'm posting a contest or participating in one, or one of Tom's threads. But I'm trying to post more to be more involved in the community, as I kind've feel bad I'm not. I just hate drama and all the stuff that happens in the threads.

Yes, because you could still talk about interesting subjects without being stupid. But of course you can't expect everyone to get along but there are such things as mature arguments.

Don't take any of the shit you read online seriously, nobody does.

When someone is being an edgy asshole, they do it because they know it pisses you off, and your OP just does nothing but let them know that you acknowledge them, which, in turn, encourages more shitposting.

Think about this. Most of us are way better irl, much better than if you meet someone in communities where you have to be politically correct and adhere to a social norm. They usually hide their negative opinions to avoid ostracism.

We like to be brutally honest, and our opinions challenged.

Interesting. Here's my take.

Most Human beings (Let's say Type A):
- want to be right, hate to be wrong.
- want to be superior
- want others to follow them

Those who do the opposite of the above towards them, like pointing out the truth or their mistakes, make them feel inferior, or don't want to follow them will:
- be somewhat their enemies
- face trouble, in the form of flaming, disrespect, bad behavior
- probably be bullied

There is a type B:
- more tolerant
- respect other people's beliefs
- do not give people trouble

And when type A people with contrasting opinions clash, we have a war. No one wants to give in. Traits of the 7 sins: envy, pride, wrath...

Type B people are often called "weak". But in a way, they are strong. Since they can take it when people call them "cowards" or "wusses" and still stay calm and not give in to their emotions.

My 2 cents.

Classic Newgrounds, personally I love it. It tells people that you subtly disagree with them.

Also why give a shit about these peoples opinions are? Who are they to tell you what is right and what is wrong?

Also also, not everything you say is enlightening.

Variety is the spice of life. Without the controversy, without the broad spectrum of opinions, without the angry paragraphs punched into keyboards with clenched teeth... well... there would be no discussion. People would just post to congratulate each other for making the same old boring arguments that stem from the same old boring cultural agendas.

Take your gloves off, sharpen your teeth, and play Devil's Advocate every once in a while.

I bet that if everyone's internet accounts were linked to their actual lives IRL, the amount of shitposting would decrease.
As in, for EVERY account you created online, your name, picture, address, and phone number would be associated with that account for all to see so they know it's actually you (name and picture minimum).

The pros of the anonymity of the Internet = freedom, people are more open (or more fake)
Cons = the worst of people come out due to no fear of negative consequence.

Right. I wouldn't change my opinions regardless because I'm not a coward, nor an asshole like some have proven themselves to be. I'm surprised they aren't banned yet....where's the mods? Anyway, I used to know people like this in real life who actually did this shit in real life...no joke. A few years ago, I didn't know any better, then they ended up turning on me and spreading a rumor I raped someone and then every one of my "friends" believed them, most of them anyway. So that's how I lost my friends, and that's partially why I hate them. Some people just like to start drama because they aren't afraid to, and want to be entertained. Dumb...

No?

So... dear OP. If you're thinking you're so good yourself, then what about stop posting virtual slaps to your opponents? Hmmm...

If you seriously think I'm an asshole for posting about some insightful thing as "let's be a better more helpful community", you're out of your mind. I'm open to opinions and ideas, but what I'm doing isn't as much of a slap as it is an observation stating why I don't like to post in this community because of them. When you're trying to be helpful, that's different than just shitposting for no reason.
