I found a nice looking Dell PowerEdge 1U server on ebay for like $220.
Specs:
16 GB DDR2 FB-DIMM SDRAM
Two Intel Xeon E5345 quad cores @ 2.3 GHz
2x 73GB 15,000 RPM SAS Hard Drives
2 Redundant 750W Hot Plug Power supply
A bit old yes, but it would make for a nice, inexpensive home server.

Enjoy your power bills!
Also, home servers deal with a tiny workload, whereas business servers deal with a huge workload from multiple PCs.

Lol, power bills? My PC has an 800W PSU, and the power bills arent outrageous from that. And, oh trust me... I like to test limits with computers. Id probably have fun with this thing.

DDR2 RAM is comparitively expensive to replace vs. DDR3. I wouldn't do it if you need reliable uptime with zero resources, but if you're just fucking around and wanna toss VMs, different OSes, etc. on it then by all means.
What generation of PowerEdge? II, III?
