As I understand it was primarily a 1950s fashion statement. Back then, it worked. Now (especially with the influx of neckbeards sporting them)? Not so much.

Misguided dorks wear them as an easy way to convince themselves they're exuding a more refined, old-fashioned aura of class (without actually having to take the effort to dress themselves properly), in doing so making up a totally arbitrary metric by which they can consider themselves superior to all the other, infinitely cooler kids.
