I do appreciate constructive threads!
Currently we are working on some projects that should be very attractive to developers and people who contribute content to the site, so I hope NG will grow as a place to develop and share progress on projects.
The big thing that we do need to re-focus on is what would make NG grow and maintain general viewers, because people who make stuff like to have access to an audience that watches stuff. We can get higher view counts by putting more video game parodies and sprite movies on the front page, but I really want to cultivate something different than that... A large audience that really appreciates people trying to make new stuff. A place where experimentation in games, movies, audio, art, etc. can be more rewarded than it is now. And still plenty of parodies, don't get me wrong, but I want more curiosity to click things that aren't recognizable.
The tough thing about going after this audience is that it can be a fleeting audience, always looking for something newer and cooler... And on that note I really don't want a pretentious cool kid crowd. I want people who can appreciate the full spectrum, from fart jokes to the avant-garde... It's the sort of crowd that comes out for Pico Day and they are awesome people, I want every person like that to give NG a shot. The snobs can hang out on snob sites and the idiots can hang out on idiot sites, while people who genuinely appreciate the act of creation and are open to all sorts of craziness should be hanging out here. But are there enough of those to constitute a large audience?
Keeping that in mind, what would make the general public more interested in engaging with the content and artists on Newgrounds? Or how could the content be presented in a way that would make people explore it longer and look at more of it? Or am I just rambling?

This. Lots of new stuff this video game and movie season, so much potential for new animations and new NG lurkers/users.

Whenever you look up "best of" month or week, it gives you new audio or flash because they have very few votes and it only takes one or two 5s to put it up there even if it has very few views.

Perhaps a more advanced search function and a new way to showcase and new flashes as well as something more to encourage people to vote more on new flashes specifically.
Increasing the standard as well would be nice, making it easier to blam and harder to save new flashes.
Maybe a front page section specifically made for new flashes that catch the eye of mods and/or staff.
As for engagement, if there was a way to ramp up social features more, it may encourage new people to keep coming back to the site.

I've been wanting to try something that awards early adopters, like people who "were fans before it was popular", but that might just result in people writing scripts to favorite every new submission, or whatever the context is for earning that cred. Unless we really balanced it out in a way that you couldn't just spam your love of every piece of content.
We also have plans for collaborative viewing and stuff down the road... For the social aspect.
It would also be fun to see who else is watching something as you are watching it, but that becomes a privacy concern for people so it would need to be something they enable - if it defaults to OFF it would be a big question of how many people actually enable it.

To be fair, most people who would come here to enjoy the content may not know how to make such a script, and to balance it out could be easy; make it work similar to the whistle system. If you favorite everything, then there's a high chance you will end up favoriting low quality stuff, and make it so that users who favorite submissions which get blammed lose more "points" than one would gain from favoritng items which become frontpaged or popular, meanwhile, you gain no "points" for stuff which neither becomes popular or blammed.
We also have plans for collaborative viewing and stuff down the road... For the social aspect.
That seems like a great idea, can't wait.

Maybe you mean something similar to the side chat Kongregate has for its games?
Because something similar would be awesome.
It could be implemented on new submissions and submissions that have won awards in the past.
You could also use such a feature, only tweaked, for live feedback for developers to use when making a game or flash.

Can someone please explain what this "secret club" shit people keep posting about is? Chdonga and isn't the first person to say this.

Issue: The news page is fucked up. Not this page; this one. Some people still use this to meet new people. And there are lots of users that may forever go unnoticed because only artists and staff news posts are visible.
Solution: Bring the riff-raff column back, or stretch the staff and artist columns so there isn't that dead space to the right.

I've seen that there are a lot of users who have been on Newgrounds for years that are not very welcoming to newer users. Of course I was joking about banning them all, but I still think something should be done about talking down on users for having a later sign-up date.

Yeah, but is there really a "secret club" sort of attitude? Like, not even two weeks ago, someone was pissed off about this in the chat and said NG had a "secret club" feel to it.
And how the fuck would go about fixing that? Remove the Sign-Up Date tag?

I think people should get some form of warning for posting in an exclusive manner. I mean, insulting someone for being new isn't worthy of a ban, but I still think there should be action taken when someone does it.

We should be able to flag flashes again, and less comment flags should be needed to reach a mod.

Agreed, on both.
I think there are a few ways to get around that in the meantime. SCTE3 (a whistleblower) likes to share links to reviews which need to be flagged in places like NG Chat, and threads in the Where Is / How To forum. I'll always flag something abusive if it's linked to me.

I tried to make a thread called "Abusive Posts in Need of Deletion" for people to post links to abusive posts but I got locked, or blocked, or castrated... what term is it? Apparently that is against the rules. I have found plenty of abusives, I'll link users. Should I link them privately or something?

That's the sort of thing that belongs in Where Is/How To. General is more about being an idiot than actually doing anything to contribute to NG.. lol.

Erm, maybe? You should ask EJR (or whatever mod's online) if it's OK, but I think it would make a ton of sense to have a thread where we can share the names of users who have made several abusive reviews.

Remember Rage's Gift? That got locked because an abusive reviews thread just wouldn't work. It's a needless hassle for both BBS mods and review mods. Just flag the reviews and review mods will get to them. They are still around.

Also I should note that in cases of people with multiple abusive reviews just PM a review moderator. The most accurate and up-to-date list is here. It's remained current since the redesign because it automatically updates, as opposed to the wiki page.

if ya'll have a problem report it to someone who can do something don't just sit here and throw a temper tantrum, ask a mod, chat with tom.it's better solution to ask questions to people who can do something rather than just say,as example: "oh shit's busted derp derp newgrounds is dead durka durka the mods are too strict waa waa waa", talk to the staff and problems can get solved, not all of them can actully be fixed these things take time.

Uh.... today I tried to watch a movie and it wouldn't work. I disabled AdblockPlus... it helped, still didn't load properly. I disabled Ghostery (tool for blocking trackers) and then it sort of started working. It started playing an ad. Not like a regular flash ad, though, like a television commercial, but it was video and didn't have any preloading or anything, so it just froze on my slow internet and I'm just real confused about whether all of a sudden this is a thing we have, like Hulu or something,
cause if there's one single thing that will make me quit visiting this site and depositing after 7 years, it's that ^
So, does anyone know what's going on? I didn't see this the last time I watched this very same flash like a week ago.

Also, the thing that annoys me about this site lately is that file sizes are getting very large for no reason and they're not in that regular flv format. They're taking forever to load; it's crazy. The loading time is longer than the duration of the animation frequently. My internet may be slow, but it's not THAT slow. I saw something that was, no shit, 1/10 GB. Are you kidding me? I'm not downloading 100 MB worth of movie. What the hell is wrong with vectors? Vectors make so much more sense.

Well, gripe about it. Lay it all out: don't be shy. I want to see ALL the hate, your the dirtiest insults, your lowest points, and your angriest most pissed off rage. ok Im going to throw my 2 cents here.
I dont beleive myself as a huge contributor to the website, except mabye for the artwork, but otherwise I havent upload a single flash animation since 2 years from now. Regardles I think what I have to say may help a bit.
I have already said this on my interview previously so I am going to quote it for the sake of it being usefull to the thread:
... The main reason I joined was because I found, and still find Newgrounds one of the few websites that is so much dedicated to animation and games(and now illustration). It's truly one of the best websites to showcase your work, even if you are a begginer, or a profesional.
So having that in mind I decided to share with the community some bits of my humble flash animations, and even if some of the comments were harsh at the beggining, others were very supportive. It is a great place to get good feedback, and learn from your mistakes.
Newgrounds is a place to learn, to experiment, to test, to have fun, to improve, to reach goals in terms of techniques of any sort, to learn from yourself and from others, to share knowledage and gather it.
From my perspective, people are trying to use newgrounds as a bank account like if they could get some cents in their pockets after barely geting their 30 second flash movie into the portal... then those people come to this thread complaining that NG is dying, and the irony on that is just overwhelming.
Users from this website turned from creators to viewers, and from viewers to critique bitches.
just look at my flash animations, the first ones are horrible, the timing is wrong, the scenes are endless and boring, and trough the years I improved my technique thanks to this community, and as a result I was able to inspire new people into animation, wich was just crazy. Thats the spirit of newgrounds.
Tell me where you can find a site to experiment like this one...with a community open to new things... I dont think you have an answer for that.
