Do you think mods should be locking hot discussion threads just because they were made in a "trolling" way, or the topic isn't something which they agree with?

Everyone and their grandmother knows that sort of thread, and the reason they're popular, but does that mean the thread shouldn't be allowed to run its course? What are your thoughts.

Well, I think if they're flame threads and not going anywhere or if they belong in another forum then it's reasonable.

You're telling me you want threads to be locked just because people are having too much fun?

I have seen many hot topics get locked in the past.

Most of them where Image dumps
flame bait
Etc

Personally IMO I think the mods aren't locking enough of these shit topics.

I remember when forum games weren't allowed now we have 40-50 page threads that are now basically 1+ topics running about it is saddening.

The moderation is somewhat responsible for the death of this place.

OMG guys you can't discuss religion in here, it is trolling

The mods need to fucking wise up, seriously, the NG BBS is dying and at this point they should only be locking spam threads

yeah I'd reckon just when people bump every thread with 'penis' in the title or post SEO spam, they're the only threads that should be locked these days

Wow, really? I find that the BBS is more interesting when it has a few go-to threads to keep activity alive if there's nothing to talk about. I think the mods need to do a lot less work pruning out threads they don't agree with and a lot more work just contributing to discussion as if they were a part of the community.

It's disappointing to see mods with several thousand well thought out posts hidden behind a few pages of witty lock messages.

nope.

The mods we have now are just policing hardcore.
There is no real need for it... all it does is let people down when they come back to a popular thread and find it locked.

Some of the most fun threads I've participated in or read I've found locked/deleted by mods (mspaint adventures thread, some others i've forgot about). I doubt anyone even cares enough anymore to post threads like that only to find it locked by mods. The BBS truly is dead.

That thread was locked 3 years ago, with people saying that the thread was dead 2 pages before it was locked, and some guy made a new one which didn't get locked.

Then there's the MSPaint space adventure and the MSpaint war, which are both unlocked. (also a jjjuk thread, which he wanted locked).

So these threads don't get locked because the fun police are in force. Either they get no activity from the forum users, or they have run their course and be left to die.

The first thread was locked based on pure opinion on what was funny and what was not. It was a healthy thread until Poozy decided to lock it because he thought it was unfunny. It had gone really far since the first 2 pages, although changes were made, it wasn't dead. It was still funny. Not far until another thread was made, which also reached into 20-30 something pages and still going, before it was deleted without any notice. They weren't dead. People liked participating and they had active contributors.

You linked me to two threads that barely got anywhere beyond 2 and 6 pages, which really isn't as far as threads like these used to go. I don't even think those threads got a fraction of the attention the last threads got.

... until the final 2 pages, when the thread was well and truly over.
If Poozy thought it was unfunny, he would have locked it immediately after 2-3 pages, rather than 15 pages later when the thread was dead.

You linked me to two threads that barely got anywhere beyond 2 and 6 pages, which really isn't as far as threads like these used to go.

If I could show you better examples I would have provided them, because that'd enforce my point better.

The only other long-winded adventure I can think of is the huge house adventure 1 and 2. One was requested to be locked by the author because it became a mess, while the other died from lack of activity.

I don't even think those threads got a fraction of the attention the last threads got.

Refer to my point that these died due to lack of attention from users, rather than a mod stepping in and locking them.

It would be logical to do so if it's a hot thread that contains pages upon pages of spams, trolling, flames, etc. It would be reasonable to prevent that thread from continuing on any further.

Why? If people are flaming each-other or responding to 'trolls', they're doing it voluntarily. People want to argue and are not allowed to do so by the mods. I know it's not particularly acceptable to complain about the mods but fuck it, I'm 25 and have been posting here for like a decade and I think they're making bad mistakes. Those rules are suitable for a busy forum, but if everyone is having a great time arguing in a flamey trolly thread then the mods are not doing anyone any favours by locking it.

Sometimes this sort of thing feels like taking popcorn out of the microwave 20 seconds early, other times it feels like finally being able to walk away from your obnoxious little sibling.

Overall, I think it ultimately depends on the thread itself.

They're mostly because they're trolling or if because the mods think they aren't going anywhere. That's what they mostly say as the last post before shutting down.

That's a thread made before September 2012,
and there's a cached version available on Google, with an image taken on June 2013, which means it was still around then. (sorry if that link don't work)

A BBS mod definitely didn't delete it, because the site design doesn't allow us delete old threads.

More than likely the thread creator decided to wipe their posts/delete their account, which is what happened in this thread.
