Having trouble animating mouth shap 2013-08-19 13:54:07 Reply

I am new to animation and toonboom animate pro 2 (The tool that I am using to do the animation).

I am trying to animate the mouth and get smooth mouth / lip movements. But I am not able to get that.

Here is a video of me just getting the mouth shapes and face. Rigging it and doing the auto lip sync and doing the mouth animation (playing it).

It is not smooth. You can see the mouth shapes just move from one shape to another very abruptly and they are not smooth.

This is the rigging method that I used incase anyone is wondering:

I did try this later on.

When I use the transform tool (scale and skew) on one of the drawings (in one of the frames) in the middle (between two different drawings) and make changes, and include a motion keyframe for that, then, there is some smoothness between the first and the middle (newly created / modified) drawing.

But I can't make changes to the middle drawing using any other tool. I am only restricted to scale and skew (transform tool).

How do I get smooth mouth animations / movement?

I might be able to help. Even though I don't use toon boom, I know how to do lip sync fairly well.
Here are my two suggestions for what you can do:
1.) Good old fashioned fbf (what I do.) The basically means that you draw all of the mouths that match the sounds, and then do one or two inbetweens from one mouth shape to another. I sometimes re-use mouths for sounds that are very similar to each other.
2.) Draw a bunch of different mouths, and convert them into a symbol. Then use a mixture of tweening and altering the frames to make one mouth look more like it is turning into the next mouth (what I used to do.)
I hope this helped.
Bryn.

I can only advise you to watch these, because tutorials there from professional animators and they make it work.

I use Animate pro 2 as well, It has auto lip sync capabilities. After you run your VoiceOver through the auto lip-sync tool you might need to add or adjust your mouth set. I know that the site provides tutorials on how this is accomplished in greater detail, also my friend Adam Phillips who does the Bitey of Brackenwoods series has done some tutorials as well. He also loves to help other aspiring animators, so you might want to contact him as well. I hope this helps.
