I love to cook stuff, anything and everything, especially shit I've never heard of before. I haven't always done this though, and I wondered, "How many other people actually cook their own meals?"
I stopped buying fast food and restaurant stuff on a regular basis a few years ago, mostly because I didn't have the money, but after fixing that problem, because it was fun.
Cooking is a very loose term too. Chopping a carrot and mixing in some leafy stuff is cooking. Churning ice and salt to freeze ice cream is cooking. Most people just think using the stove is cooking, or the microwave....
So I wondered also, "What do people like to cook? What have they wanted to attempt, or found they like?"
My most recent favorite is "spicy breakfast potatoes and an awesome egg". I made it up myself, and it's damn good.
Basically, just cube and dice a couple potatoes and chop an onion into little squares (dice).
Make the seasoning: tablespoon of salt, tablespoon of pepper, two teaspoons basil, half table spoon of garlic powder, and three teaspoons chili powder. (There will be left over seasoning)
Fry it up in some oil, medium to medium-high heat, sprinkling the seasoning over the potatoes. Flip it when its crispy on the bottom.
When its done, empty the pan out into about 4 paper towels to soak up excess oil.
Then toss in a little bit of butter, a splash of red vinegar, an egg, and rip up a little green onion in the pan on low to medium heat.

I'm a beast in the kitchen and i'm not ashamed to admit it.
The trick is to learn to prepare meals quickly that taste good and are in ample supply

I can totally cook. But I tend to not do so most of the time. Mainly because I either can never think of anything I want to make or because I have nothing here to actually make anything with, haha.
i can make some pretty awesome pizza from scratch ._.

As an American, basic 'finn and swede foods' interests me greatly.
Could you give me an example?

That sounds pretty awesome right now. I haven't actually made noodles from scratch in years, I think you've just sent me on a food mission this week.

I've been into cooking for a few years and have started cooking more often lately. Last thing I made was a sort of Asian style fried rice with shrimp, shallots, water chestnuts, eggs, and this fried rice sauce my dad got me from an Asian supermarket. Before that, it was pork chops rubbed with adobo and cayenne powder, left to soak for 3 days in recaito, charcoal grilled, topped with more recaito and some tomatillo sauce, with some quick and simple rice and beans on the side.

Of course. Pasta that has been sitting on the self for forever just sounds so unappetizing. Why do that when I have a pasta machine attached to my own countertop. Eggs, flour, olive oil and a firm hand. I don't know why people are so lazy they never make their own.

I can cook most B-List type meals rather easily. However as far as my taste buds go, I'm addicted to fast foods.

good enough to sell. I was even starting to make an online menu for my coworkers since they like the cooking.
It's still not anywhere finished though, and most of these things are simple by what I can make (until I finish the Entree menu though, and add the Sushi).
Future items will be: Osaka Roll, Beef Wellington, and Crustacean Étouffée.

Yes, I can cook. I even cook things straight from scratch. I'm looking into actually growing my own supplies to really start it from the ground up. It's absolutely zen. I'm no Escoffier, but I'm able to work from a recipe, change it, and make one up if I can't find one that suits my needs.

Also, has anyone here tried growing Grapes or Hops? I was thinking it might be nice to have a little brewing action on the side. We could make a c&c thread if we have enough people!

Yes.
But I will say one thing: Climate / climate control is important with grapes.
Also, it would be best to find three kinds of superb grape species and cross pollinate them until third generation if you want a truly balanced flavour.
Haven't tried Hops though.

Deal.. how much do you know? Where do you live?
I live on the coast of Massachusetts near vineyard territory. I might be able to find a few clones from Martha's Vineyard. Otherwise I'll grow them from seed!

Texas, but I control the climate and soil of my grapes.
You can actually experiment with your own grapes, but if you can get your hands on them, you should try getting red grapes grown in Iceland, Muscadine grapes grown in Hawaii (if possible, if not the standard will do, but that Hawaiian soil gives a nice addition to grapes) and Chardonnay grapes. From there, you can try cross pollinating however you want (including using other species as a stepping stone) to get your desired flavour, or make wine from these separate grape species and create the perfect blend, or simply experiment with creating a balanced or sophisticated species from the three by mixing soils etc.
I prefer blended wines, as they ring the most complex tastes and taste best when done correctly.
I'll give you a little trick when it comes to inserting flavours through means of the soil (don't want to give too many secrets after all); adding certain tree barks in powdered forms can help. Careful though, doesn't always work well (willow and reds don't typicaly go well, but willow and whites aren't that bad).

Jeez, you really are an expert! So you buy those grapes internationally? Or are you saying that you grow certain species that have been transported from those locations?
It just so happens that i have a brother who is leaving for Hawaii in exactly 1 week for a semester at school. And a friend has been living there for a while (on a different island). I don't know anyone who lives in Iceland, but I'm sure I can do something interesting with Muscadine and whatever's available in Massachusetts.

With some tongs and Italian seasonings, I can make a stupidly awesome steak. I'm also great at making cappuccinos and lattes.

Wow, That's where I get my Muscadine from; my brother! He lives in Hawaii. He grows them sometimes and then ships them, and I pay him when I want them from there. They can grow pretty big on Hawaiian soil. I keep the seeds though for every other time though, and send him some when I want more straight from there.

Wait—huh? I'm not sure what you mean.. you send him the Muscadine Seeds from old grapes every other time so that he can grow new vines? Are you pulling my leg?
