Jamaica is a great place to visit and it's a beautiful country but it has a high violent crime rate and it's also known for a lot of anti-gay hate. Jamaica's government hands out prison sentences to people who have gay sex.

I'm not, by any means, condoning what they did. But when you go to a party intended for straight people and you're a guy trying to pass as a girl, you can't expect everything to be all smiles and cupcakes.

Why does it surprise you? Jamaica has laws against gay sex, that carry up to 10 years in prison if a man is convicted of having sex with another man. However, those 10 years of prison aren't like the US prisons, where it's just boring and lifeless. Jamaican 10-year sentences for gay sex incorporate having to do hard labor.

So people are scared of even thinking about gay people there. Being gay or transgender is just extremely frowned upon in Jamaica.

He probably shouldn't have gone to a straight party, that was sorta asking for trouble. None the less, it was very wrong what happened. I hope the parents feel bad, they should.

even though a regular teenager would feel much safer at a straight party than a teenager all dressed in drag they wouldn't get an article if they were lynched by a mob despite that it would have been far more surprising in the case of a regular teen. wearing drag to a straight party might not even have been the reason he got lynched . . . the article just throws around off-handedly that it was a transgender teen & that he was a victim of mob violence & then expect the reader to draw the lines between the dots. it's not very good journalism

There are a few places in both Asia and Africa where you can be put to death for homosexuality, and there are many where you can be improsoned. It's fucked up.

Just because it has happened elsewhere doesn't change that jamaica is ridden with poverty, has a strong anti-gay sentiment nationally, and a high rate of violent crime, which makes this totally unsurprising.
