As a single movie, 300 is better than any individual part of the Lord of the rings saga. However, all of the movies put together are collectively better than 300.
LOTR is better as a whole, however 300 is better than any one LOTR movie.

I never got into fantasy crap like LOTR, it just seems boring.
300 was okay, but nothing too great like reading the Epics of Homer.

the story of the 300 spartans is true, that makes the story much much more interesting to me. Plus im greek so... and if youve ever seen Gerard Butler (King Leonidas) in gamer then you just realised violence is an important part of a good movie.

Comparing The Lord of the Rings to 300 is like comparing a well done New York strip steak wrapped with chocolate covered bacon to Lunchables (the kind without the piece of candy, mind you).
Of course I'm a LotR fanboy, so naturally I'm biased in this comment. Still, I will always choose a whole day dedicated to watching the LotR trilogy over an hour or two of 300. 300 is meh, to me. Cool action I guess, and super stylized, but certainly not in my Top 100 Favorite Movies list.
Also Gimli's beard makes Leonidas' beard look like a fluffy kitten, lol.

Lord of the Rings was Peter Jackson's magnum opus and will be remembered in hundreds of years. As a cheesy action flick with incredible visuals, 300 does it's job well, however the comic book adaptation is far from cult status and deserves no pedestal in the mausoleum of the greats.

Lord of the Rings seems to have a more interesting premise and characters. Granted, it takes place in a fantasy world and the series has three movies to do it in, whereas 300 had to make the story more realistic, and only had one movie.
I was never a fan of the movie 300 (especially after all of the "THIS IS SPARTA" bullshit that surrounds it), but it's pretty good.

Meh.
300 was entertaining. Flared my aura once or twice feeling meself on a battlefield, but the true reality of mass murder, scalpelized, organized and focused genocide that is a true battle in a real war, was not there. It was glorified, not made to be the terrifying, living-or-dying spectacle of hate and insufficiency which it is. For that, I agree it was flashy, deserved a good chance to portray war, but for one who knows in his heart the epic depravity of war, there is no comparison there.
LOTR was pretty fun. Made little pretense of glorifying war, instead made it a task of necessity. There was plenty of war and it was made, generally, to be a point of terrible worry, not suicidal glory.
The end.

The Lord of the rings has a bigger fan base and actually made Orlando Blooms acting bearable.

At best I'd say 300 is "based on a true story"

LOTR has a larger fan base and it's a whole trilogy as opposed to 300 which is just one single film. LOTR even has influence on a wider medium than 300, because it was the subject of novels and such by J.R.R Tolkien.
I guess LOTR wins.
Just chillin' like always.

Also it's to be noted that the Spartans does have some allies helping them in a time of need and Xerxes wasn't a gigantic transvestite.
What the Spartans did are badass but the comics which the movie was based from took some liberties.

I can't imagine there are many frequent film goers who would seriously vote 300 over the Lord of the Rings.
I know there was a lot of hype about The Lord of the Rings ten years ago and I can understand some may find the series a little bit overrated, but in terms of characters and plot I reckon it's vastly superior to 300. If you take away all that "THIS IS SPARTA!" stuff, 300 is really not an impressive or memorable film at all I think.

I disagree. As an actor, Orlando Bloom barely tops Keanu Reeves.

As a movie, Lord of the Rings had nothig but fantasy to draw back on. So anything goes. I love all of Tolkien's works.
As for 300, the filmakers changed enough of the actual historical events, it may as well also be based on fantasy. Seriously, the persian empire was negatively portrayed, and huge aspects of Spartiate life were convieniently ignored by the filmakers.

If anyone replies to this and tries to defend Taratino with all their sweaty-fingered might.
Then you're fucking retarded.
Not because Taratino makes bad movies, I love those things.
But because this is a case of Trolling 101.

Clearly the Witch King Angmar would just come in and send the Spartans fleeing in terror with his blackbreath. And even if any of them were brave enough to fight, he could just use his Morgul Blade on them.
So LoTR

The Lord of The Rings, obviously. It's what we could call an epic. The guy who wrote it had made so many stories attached to it, he made up a language for all of them, it's a beautiful piece.
300 was a good Persian vs Greek historic battle, which was very good in a way as well.

I haven't seen either (though I really want to read the LOTR books), but I can't comprehend why anyone would choose 300 over LOTR.

I despise 300. It's a mess of a film and really has nothing much going for it besides a few interesting fight scenes.
The Lord of The Rings is a great film series (and an even greater book) with lots of thought and effort put into it, and is genuinely VERY entertaining. I'm obviously biased, but even without that bias 300 still pales in comparison.

300 was pretty mediocre. Only easily entertained child (or man-child) enjoy an abuse of slow-motion in the style of Zack Snyder.
The new 300 looks just as bad.
