And since Sephiroth is a First Class Soldier(General?), whereas Magus is a leader of an army, we can assume that both of them have extensive combat knowledge.

This battle can't really be concluded, but judging from strength and ability, Sephiroth would be superior in comparison.

Yes, but 'one' must consider that whereas Sephiroth was meant to be a final boss, Magus was only a midway through the game boss, and therefore, his strength was weakened as to make sure that Crono and friends were not uberly pwned by his vicious strength and assault.

So, you can't really make an accurate assumption.
