I'm looking for an excuse to buy a new computer, but new games just aren't doing enough to convince me these days.
I miss the old days when it was nearly impossible to play the latest games on 5 year old machines.

I suppose all of the GTX cards at the moment have surpassed their highest finite level of data that the developers had listed on there Specifications required to run the games?it depend on the budget of the gamer.

Upgrade to Nvidia surround (Eyefinity for AMD users). That will easily push your graphics cards.

Try a higher resolution screen, 3 screen setup, stereoscopic 3D and antialiasing if you haven't already.

The games do advance. The requirements do not. In fact, this results from further advancement.

With the way games look now a days there isn't really much room for improvement.

I'm not sure why not spending more money would bother you but. graphically games are slowed down by consoles. (and other things are slowed as well)

Well, I do hope these new to be released consoles do raise the bar for PC games.

Please describe your hardware. And if it is anything less recent than the last year I will describe several experiences you CANNOT have.

So you miss having to spend hundreds to upgrade every year or two? I think they're fine as they are. With today's graphics there's nothing to complain about.

Marketing plays a role in this and what the majority of people have in their system. Apparently, the most popular gpu now is the Intel Graphics 3000, according to Steam.

Or just spend $600 every 6 years to get the new consoles(Controllers, Xbla, etc)? Seem like a pretty even trade. . .
Anyways, wait for the new consoles to drop, then the new gpus will really come out.

Most of my gaming I do on a 2010 laptop:
Acer Aspire 7745G
Core i5-460M at 2.53GHz
Mobility Radeon HD 5650
8GB DDR3 RAM
2x500GB hard drives
There is no single game that thing cannot run.
I also have an older Core 2 Duo (3.0GHz) desktop with a recently purchased GTX 660 video card - I can certainly max out any game with it.

You are so uninformed i hate you. You do not have to spend money yearly on a new computer unless you want to be on the bleeding edge of technology. My old ass radeon x1550 could play some pretty new games before i upgraded, and i dont even remember when i got that. If you spend about 1k on a computer, expect it to last a good while without upgrading. It will be able to play games maxed out.
