Might I suggest a self help book then? I don't know any off the top of my head, but I've read a few and they're pretty easy to digest.

Mein Kampf.
It's got everything you need to know about governments, humanity, and the book itself is a piece of history.
Just chillin' like always.

I meant that as a joke.
A book that I would actually recommend to you is a book called "Why Government Can't Save You."

Covers all said criteria. It's in movie form, too.

I recently read Lexicon by Max Barry. It's about a young girl living on the streets making money by scamming strangers being taken into an exclusive institution dedicated to the education of people with the potential to become "Poets". In this organization, a Poet is a person with the ability to use certain tricks of language to persuade people to do mostly anything.
If that's your kind of thing, it introduces some scarily realistic concepts and ideas, so I'd recommend looking into it.
Idoru by William Gibson. If you ever wondered what the father of cyberpunk would say about the Facebook generation this is your answer. The man has a gift in making the world so big that the inherent smallness in everything we do shines.

Not a bad read in all honesty, it's pretty long and a wee bit boring but it has some pretty poetic verses.
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
Moby Dick
The Iliad & The Odyssey
Of Mice And Men
To Kill A Mockingbird
and The Outsiders
thats all I could think of at the moment ._.
How about THE Good Book?
I myself have honestly never made my way all the way through it cover to cover, I've read certain sections in their entirety but then there are those rather lengthy very dull parts. Ugh.

If My Sharona isn't prime lovemaking music, then I don't know what love is.

Nah, they were watching the movie in V for Vendetta. Which isn't a terrible watch itself.

C.H. Dalton's "A Practical Guide to Racism"
Anything by Douglas Adams, if for the long haul, the entire Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, if shorter, the book "Starship Titanic."

Oh. If short is what you're after, don't go after the Dark Tower series like I suggested...
This is what the whole series looks like, minus one book which is about the thickness of the third book in this image
I don't have the second book because I lent it to my nephew, and he has a tendency to lose books so I'm probably never seeing it again

Hmm.........what about Four Perfect Pebbles?
or The Epic Of Gilgamesh
My brother and father are huge into the Dark Tower series. I've yet to give it a shot, but I know its good.
Shit, I met a bassist with a Dark Tower-themed tattoo on his arm ffs...its bound to be great.
My brother is also impressing upon me to read the Dune series.
The Fountain Head + Atlas shrugged. It is utmost logical.

Yaaaaaaaas. Second this.
Also, In The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is a seriously good read. It's a fantasy novel, but it's a really good read if you like a different take on magic and the mystery behind the narrator and his past and the legends about him.
Seriously neat, couldn't put it down, the next one (The Wise Man's Fear) is really good too.
Anddddddd if you like that one, the Night Angel Trilogy and the Demon Cycle books are pretty decent. Both have to do with varying magical properties and how the different cultures in each deal with it. The Demon Cycle ones have a bit of relevance since it has some allegories to terrorism and how different cultures (one of the cultures is somewhat Arabian and it's neat how they interpret the demons and how they fight them).
