Well that's wrong. It varies because no two women are the same, but the average is generally 3 - 5 inches, however, some vaginas have a tendency to swell and tent out during stimulation (you could put a fist in my first girlfriend)

It's just for show really. When it comes to practice, go deep and hard and anything over maybe 4 will do. The reasoning behind girth over length is that when you pull back from a thrust, you can stimulate the clitoris more, but if you're too long, you can't go all in at first and stimulate it at all.
