So a guy on Yahoo! Answers asked whether or not if Canada should merge with the United States. Pretty much everybody was against it, and some people made some negative comments about the US. It made me realize that many people have a lower opinion of the U.S., especially if they hail from a country with a higher quality of living. "Canadians have NO interest in being Americans. Why should we? Our country is much better - we have longer, and healthier lives due to our healthcare system, we don't go around killing each other (crime is much less in Canada), and 85% of our country is still open, wild land. What can the USA offer us? Nothing." / "Canadians look at the mess that is the USA's economy, and their huge racial problems, and say............. WHY would we want to a part of that sinking ship. ???"
What do you think of the idea of Canada merging in with the US? What would be the advantage of it, and what would be the disadvantage? I like Canada a lot, and like any country, it's not perfect and has flaws, but I think it's a very decent country to reside in. I don't think that merging the US with Canada would be a good idea, because Canadians are happy being in their own nation and don't want to deal with the issues that the US is dealing with.

If such a merger were to occur I'd make a bet that nothing will change. Everyone would go about their lives as they did before.

The Yahoo Answers answers should explain it. Canadians don't want to loose their identity and culture, and they don't want to have anything to do with the US. Not that they hate the US by any means, but they are both separate countries, but some people think that Canada should be the 51st state.
Also, Canada would deal with issues such as an increase in crime and ghettos.

Why do you hate Canada so much? Also I've never heard of Canadians being stereotyped as "assholes." Sure they exist but generally they're known as being nice people.
Yeah it's cold and all, but some people like that. Also, wouldn't you rather that the US merge with Canada than Mexico? At least Canada is safe.

They wouldn't anymore than they already have, considering the US has its own district cultures and identities in itself such as the South hell so does Canada with Quebec. Joining politically will do absolutely nothing.
and they don't want to have anything to do with the US.
Some don't, my point is that the relationship between the two is so close that if they were to join into one country
Not that they hate the US by any means, but they are both separate countries, but some people think that Canada should be the 51st state.
Because of all the countries in the world no two countries have a better relationship than Canada and America. The border between the two is the longest unprotected border in the world.
Also, Canada would deal with issues such as an increase in crime and ghettos.
No they wouldn't. That's just some anti-American garbage they constantly spout because they don't know how life is in America.

That was just one guy, and yeah I remember hearing about him. There was also a mass shooting that killed 1 person and injured 19 at a university in Montreal in 2006, in which the gunman killed himself. Also, last year in Toronto a gang-related shooting happened in which 2 young people were killed and 24 others were injured.
However, those are just a few incidents. Unlike Canada, the US has a higher homicide rate. Canada has 1.6 homicide victims per 100,000 people per year, while US has 4.8 per 100,000 people, and then Mexico has a horrendous 22 per 100k people, which is mainly stemmed from drug-related disputes and cartel related crime.
At least Canada is safer than the US or Mexico.

I'm slightly inclined to agree with the guy the OP quoted, Canada always rates highly in lists of desirable places in the world to live, I'd love to visit someday. Asking if they would merge with the US is a pretty retarded question.

Exactly !
We Canadians wouldn't want to have to lower our living Standards to those of a 3rd word country like America....
After all America has over 40 million people on foodstamps ...there aren't 40 million Canadians alive today !
Last thing we need is to have to help support a burden like that !
Then there's you whole race to facism , to keep you all safe !
You all want to give yourselves over to a police state to protect you from terrorism ...tell me , who are going to protect you from the Gestapo, (or Homeland Security ... or whatever asinine name you want to call your internal Secret police force) ???
You can keep 'The Land of the Oppressed, & the home of the cowardly (please protect us that person ...they might be a threat )
LMFAO.

It's funny how you have such a happy response mood with how you're saying "No" to something. We would most likely become the biggest country in the world and have even greater access to both oceans than before. It would be a better idea than merging with Mexico because they'd be less compliant seeing as how we stole some of their land. I don't think we ever stole Canada's land. Well, maybe Alaska, but no one wanted that anyway.

I am a liberal, actually, and I wonder that same thing about people who use the word all the time. I'm simply pointing out to Tony that if Canada were to be annexed into the United States, its collective viewpoint on what constitutes good governance would fundamentally alter the political climate of the nation as a whole, probably in a direction that he wouldn't like.
Besides, by America's current standards, all Canadians ARE liberals. :P
