Skinning & utilizing rabbit corpse

I love animals (especially cute ones :D) but a boating program I signed up for where I'll be living in the wilderness building boats and learning primitive skills for the next 3 weeks involves an OPTIONAL skill development exercise where we will be crafting with a dead rabbit's body parts. "No piece will be left unused." they said.

As a cat adoption volunteer worker, I am disheartened by this. Yes, it's already dead, so it's not like I'm disrespecting nature's spawn. However... I have this feeling of dread. The program staff tried to be as convincing as possible that it really is an enriching experience that I shouldn't pass up, but I always have the option to simply not do it.

As an incoming freshman to SJSU's college of engineering, I simply wanted to learn how to build a boat, a primitive skill I think would enhance my abilities. I never expected this.

Please, all of you, either convince me or share your thoughts on my dilemma. Thank you.

Listen, I have a bit of a problem with killing animals too, but there's a point to where it's OK. As long as you use the body in some way, it's fine. If you kill it and just leave, well then, what the fuck?

Try thinking of it this way. If you had to die, would you feel better knowing that your body would not be celebrated in any way? No funeral, no friends, no burial. Just rotting away. Even animals won't eat it.

Well, animals don't have the burial rights, like we do. They don't have traditions, and they don't have recognition in death.

By you using the dead animal's carcass, to make crude knives, art, tools, food, charms, possibly a small flask, and other things, you bring meaning to the animals death.

Why would you want your death to be meaningless, when your life is not? Do the same for the animal, and you have respected it's life.

Hmm. Yeah. It's very hard. But I think of it this way: if you're going to eat and use living creatures, you should familiarize yourself with the ways they are killed and used. Seems you may be shielded from this part of your life. This could be a good learning experience for you.

I have returned.

I am not particularly proud of it, but from the sounds of it, the rabbit was raised well and interacted with in a very healthy manner and environment.

Skinning it was a lot harder than I thought. We had to get some fat off the skin which acted as more of a insulating layer... It was an arduous task. =.=

We barbecued and ate the whole thing too. It tasted sinewy and rich but a bit stale in terms of flavor...

Well if they dump you somewhere with just a tour guide and there's no stores nearby where you can easily access food without killing a creature yourself then by all means do it.

If your hunting and killing to just survive then its fine.
