Light pollution is a real problem, where I'm from there are no more space observatories because of it. It is really sad how tourism kills science and scientific research.

You do not make examples, you make excuses; you do not solve problems, you shift problems; you do not stand behind your statements, you stand behind your stasis.

But yeah, light pollution. Stars are cool. Industrialization is bad. Boo light. Also, on a related note: yay, light!

Yeah, stars are cool. All it takes is a half hour drive towards a small town region to escape light pollution for me. Of course lights are a must in metropolitan cities to reduce traffic accidents and street crime but yeah, the stars are awesome, reminds us what's really up there above us, neat.

I've been to Shanghai before. The air is pretty polluted, but it was interesting because I've never seen or smelled anything like it before. Here where I live the air is so clean and fresh.

They'll always find a remote mountain or something to build an observatory on.
There's not a shortage of empty space on Earth.

1st- there is no such thing as empty space as we know it but I know what you mean:
"Well if you are bothered by light pollution take a telescope and go to the middle of fucking nowhere"
2nd- if there is light pollution mountainous won't help. You will mostly be able to see things right above you.

Pyongyang has pretty limited light pollution. The only other option is to have all light facing toward the ground, but that makes it pretty difficult to guide planes in. You would need to have a city with very short buildings and no airport or seaport for this to be even close to possible. Still, limiting light pollution in cities would be awesome. You have to reduce air pollution too, though, if you want to see the stars.

Eliminating light pollution doesn't necessarily mean turning off all the lights.
Simply going back to firelight (or equivalent) should accomplish the same.
Now photoshop that!

Pretty beautiful. I live on long island and I remember right after hurricane sandy, when all the power on the island went out, I went outside and saw more stars in one sky then I ever had before.

I remember that one giant power outage that affected most of the northeastern US and southern Ontario about 10 years ago. Biking for ice and pop, plus REAL flashlight tag in the middle of the D was never so much fun.

I just wanted to post so you do not forget me.
