Race is not the cause of criminal behavior; it has a correlation to it. Yes, there is a very high rate of crime in America among African-Americans. But it's not something that's inherited. It has to do with their bringing up; a lot of blacks in America live in poverty. It has to do with wealth: since blacks experienced a lot of prejudice during, well, any point before the '70s, most were not able to get halfway decent jobs, and because of segregation, they weren't allowed to integrate with whites. Thus they formed the "ghettos"; little black communities with no money and high unemployment. Eventually, after the Civil Rights Movement, many African-Americans were able to get decent wages and overcome poverty. Many. But not all. There are some still today who didn't have enough opportunity to break the cycle. That's why many blacks live in poverty today. It's statistically proven that with poverty, comes higher crimes, so thus, a lot of poor blacks today make up a good deal of our crime statistics. It's not because of their race, it's because of their place. If a black person grew up in the same statistics of a middle-class white family, they'd act just the same, and vice-versa. It's just unfortunate that a lot of the poor blacks today don't get the chance they deserve, and thus have to resort to drug dealing and crime (hence the stereotypes).

tl;dr: The reason crime rates among blacks today are high aren't because they're black, but due to racism they don't really have the same chances as everyone else, thus causing many to resort to crime. Correlation =/= causation.

As for your friend, I'd recommend exposing him to a friendly African-American. Chances are he's just been exposed to the wrong people. There are plenty of black people in the world who don't fall under stereotypes, but maybe your friend just lives near the wrong communities. Find him a black friend that acts "white" and maybe it'll break down his racial barriers.
