How do you cure racism?

A friend of mine, a really socially active guy, has admitted to me that he has very minor prejudices against black people, and specifically black people. He has no idea why, and he doesn't want to have these prejudices, he just wants to be able to look at all races the same way.

According to him, he genuinely doesn't want to dislike black people, and he doesn't know why he dislikes most black people, but he can't help it, and he asked me and a few of his other friends if there was any way he could get over it.

Now to reassure you, he's not a full blown racist, he's not like "Gaaahhhh I hate anyone who isn't asian I'm gonna take it out on everyone who isn't asiannnnn!!!", he just has this very subtle tendency to prefer keeping his distance from black people. He tells me that he doesn't have anything against black people, there's just something stopping him from comfortably socializing with people of black skin color.

This is a natural human response, and it is not racism. What is healthy though is that he understands that there are feelings of fear within himself that are irrational.

Humans, like all other animals, have a natural fear of what is different than themselves. The difference can be subtle, but the results can be devastating, as with wild animals, where a simple change in the smell of their young can cause them to exterminate their own offspring.

With people, we know better, or should know better, than to give in to our instincts in this way. It is natural for people of one race, to see another race, and feel uncomfortable feelings. The way to address it is to make friends. Challenge your feelings! Do not let your mid brain tell your cerebral cortex that different means dangerous!

This is why I constantly tell people that it is okay to make a racist joke. Because you should challenge the very idea of racism by eradicating the fear of other races in your mind! If there is truly nothing to fear, than there is no reason to be upset, and therefore it is okay to laugh, and feel good.

TL/DR: Go play some basketball with a black guy and laugh with him when someone inevitably makes fun of you for being white.

Having some slight racist ideologies and prejudice is pretty much the norm, but I think just interacting with people of different races, religions, and cultural backgrounds makes you more understandable of them. Sometimes you just can't totally cure stupid.
