3.93 / 5.00 4,634 ViewsDoes anyone else have the pleasure of living near the countryside? You hear the damndest sounds sometimes. Trains in the distance, crickets by the window. The noises of every movement seem to carry on the wind for so great a distance, that when something near you happens, you can hear every little detail.
Who else knows this?
Well it is quite late tonight, and the predators are out. Not the coyotes, or even the owls are out tonight, but something is just outside my window.
At first it sounded like little feet, rustling in the leaves at a quick pace, and then it stopped. A piercing noise, like air forced out of a squeaky, leaky, rubber tube filled the air. Then the growling, so viscous, with the sound of purpose, gurgled up to my ears.
The growling gave way to a sound like mud bubbling out of a plastic pump, the kind you use to get water out of holes. Whatever was out there, it wasn't the little feet.
The noise of the struggle scared away the crickets, no more frogs in the creek. The sound of leaves were all that remained, once again, on a quiet country night.
With the sounds of death still ringing in my ears, I thought to share my candid moment of nature's most private time. The predator and the prey.
Does anyone else ever hear these struggles? How would you describe to sounds they make?
I think it was a fox, because they did not sound big. How well do your ears see in the night?
I do enjoy the sounds of pistol firing.
You sound like a massive loser with disturbances.
Pretend not to care about anything, but be bothered by everything.
You may be fast on the roads but it's no use on the track.

You're so edgy, OP, I can't even

ot; all i see and hear are cats and mosquitoes around here, pretty sad
I think I cut myself on the edge of your text. I also hear absolutely nothing but the occasional cat or bird strolling by my basement window.
Yeah we get foxes around here, they make some strange noises. Although one time at like 2:00AM I was walking home over the giant field near my house. I had headphones in so I couldn't hear much of anything, then I got to the big gate separating the field from the town and I opened and closed it behind me with a loud and satisfying 'CLUNK' of the metal latch.
I turned around and started walking and I wasn't more than about 10 seconds from the gate when I heard that same distinctive 'CLUNK' of the metal latch. I spun around instantly but saw nothing, but someone / thing had opened and closed the gate again behind me.
I ran the rest of the way home >.>
BBS Mod, PM me if you have something to report.
I live very close to a railroad, so every now and then I just hear a goddamn loud-ass train interrupting whatever I'm trying to do. And it makes my house vibrate because of the way it's built.

I hate the countryside. It's like pseudo nature, because civilization ruined it all.
You do not make examples, you make excuses; you do not solve problems, you shift problems; you do not stand behind your statements, you stand behind your stasis.

The sound of a sword cutting of someone's head is way more pleasing.

Yep. Its both a figure of speech, and a pattern of localized activity in the brain! Seeing with your ears!
When you listen to something real close, and use your mind to work out the angles, shapes, and sizes of the objects involved, it makes a mental image.
If you hear a cup drop in your kitchen, without seeing it, don't you get the image of the cup dropping in your mind? Do you ever think about what it must look like, possibly slipping off the counter-top, briefly plummeting, the moment of impact as the plastic hits the tile. The subsequent sounds of it's round exterior bouncing, each bounce happening sooner than the last, until it rolls with a hollow noise. Finally, there is no noise, and the cup is at rest.
That is seeing with your ears. Knowing a situation, from the sound. In blind people, the area of the brain that interprets visual input actually beings to receive input from the ears, nose, mouth, and skin to help restore a sense of imagery, thus proving the ability to 'see with your ears'.
