I came across a news article today about facebook allowing pictures of mastectomies etc. etc. and it made me think about this. When was it generally accepted in human culture that breasts are supposed to be exposed?
I'm not saying "we should just let girls walk around in public shirtless", I'm just asking why it's so improper for a female to expose her breasts? All they're used for (other than sex, but that's another story) is to feed children, and surely that can't be the reason.
Someone help me out here, why and/ or when did society (or pre-society) decide that it's more important for a woman to cover her chest than men?

Dudes don't have them, so they become one of the symbols of the female body. Also as soon as religion started practicing the kind of shame culture and sex phobia that was used to keep the poor in place, breaking the joy of the most basic desires is probably the smartest thing to do. (Believe in religion or not, I won't get into that, but it is a fact that it was used like that in the dark ages.)

I'm going to attempt a completely innocent assessment of why breasts are covered up in society, based on my personal beliefs.
I think that people cover parts of their bodies that give them pleasure because of guilt.
I'm a dude, and the two most erogenous zones of my body are covered with boxers. Women have an extra erogenous area, the breasts, and society tells them to cover that up and be defensive about them.
Why?
I think it is because people feel guilty about their sexual thoughts. I think it starts when people see another person's breasts, clitoris, vagina, penis, anus, nipples, scrotum, or whichever body part they believe is pleasurable.
They see it, and they think about it. Knowing that those areas cause sexual pleasure, causes sexual pleasure in the mind. Thinking about sex feels sexual.
Sexual thoughts are normally private, so they aren't usually aren't expressed publicly, to strangers. They are usually repressed, bottled up, and changed into negative feelings and thoughts like, "I shouldn't think that."
Repressing a thought feels bad, and it is bad. It causes stress, and cognitive dissonance, which is when you do one thing, but desire to do the opposite. You may want to feel sexual enjoyment, but you force yourself to not feel sexual.
So to summarize my opinion, breasts are covered because people who feel insecure about their sexual feelings, caused by viewing breasts, feel pain, which is attributed to the naked breast, instead of their own repressed thoughts anf feelings.

Man boobs are just fatty tissue, while a woman's boobs are supposed to be mostly breast tissue, which is totally different.
