The game will be out in Spring 2014, and is for the Wii U.
The main hook this time is zero gravity racing, but we will have underwater, gliding sections, as well as the return of motorcycles.
This game looks amazing in HD, one of the best I've seen for the Wii U. So excited!

I know this a pretty bold claim but so far I'd say this game rivals what I've seen for PS4/Xbox One... Or at least with the games with a cartoony art style.

I'd agree, it looks really crisp and colourful. Why dies this game take more artistic flare than the main series?

Which is why there needs to be customization to allow you to turn it off yourself. I can't stand having a perfect race get ruined by the unavoidable blue shells. It's the only thing that has stopped me from really loving the recent mario kart titles is those stupid blue shells.

There already is customization, just not so detailed as to turn certain items on or off, just a general thing like strong items or weak items only. Also, MK7 had this for online play, where you could play with just bananas or just shells or just mushrooms

This was for online communities and local multiplayer only if I am not mistaken. For the basic multiplayer they had all the items including those annoying blue shells that ruined well over half my races.
I got Tom to make a sig, bow down to me.
I'm very excited for this game, but that is still a decent amount of time to wait. This most likely means that Smash Bros will be after the summer, as they wouldn't release to big games so close together.

Great series, IMO
One of the flagship titles for the Nintendo since the first one was a hit. (You'll still see Brawl @ major fighting tournaments)
Not sure what the deal is with their releases for this system, especially with little to no third-party support.
Anywho, looking forward to seeing vids of MarioKart 8 gameplay.
I don't own the WiiU, and it's going to take more than a handful of titles for me to invest in one.

So basically, my eyes want to hug this game. The U.K gets a sick ass preorder statue of a blue shell. I want that so much.
What I've gathered from a few sites is that item selection can be set to single items, like the banana peels. I don't know if it will be Smash bros level of freedom, but it would be cool if it was.
Boomerang and piranha plant items both look good. Metal Mario was apparently way too important to be left out of this game.
And also this game looks goddamn gorgeous. Without exaggeration, the best looking game on Wii U.
