If I ever were it would firstly be a health gain (when my family indulges in meat, it is often and heavily, which I would like to opt out of sometimes but am always enticed). Secondly it would be a protest; not one with the aim of changing anything, but a protest to match my own ethics.
As it stands I am too much of a wussy meat lover to do it.
I know I know, but I live in the South West where all the supposedly local good home grown british free range etc. whatever good tag you want, we've still got lots of butchers who sell stuff they raise and kill. But I'm talking deeper bullshit than that.
Anyway like I said, I'm not even doing the vegetarian thing, so there is no sense quibbling with decisions I have slowly made for myself over a number of years.
Why does this forum create such a terrible air of getting the last word and being more right, even when it matters so little.

I feel every response you write reveals only that you read what you want to read. All I said was avoiding meat is hard. I wasn't saying anything about the people who actually do it; you just want to bring it up and whack it around.
Christ, let people not eat meat if they don't want to. If you hate snide vegetarians, then stop giving them a reason to argue by keeping shtum about it yourself. They'll stop talking if you stop replying.
The problem is that when anything becomes a means of differentiating yourself from other people, then loads of people start over-investing their self worth in the thing, and using it as a wall to hide their insecurities. Unless the thing has strong in-built checks to stop that from happening. Then only a slightly smaller number of people over-invest their self worth in it.

There is a difference between the two you know!
I'm a vegan but I don't go flaunting it around and shoving it in people's faces.
The only reason the saying goes "don't worry they'll tell you" or whatever is because food is such a common topic, and people don't realize it because we're so used to talking about food on a daily basis, it never comes up that somebody is vegan because it isn't a super common thing to hear, so when it does happen, people get that 'bad taste' in their mouths about the person for even mentioning it.
I try to keep it to myself now, but people often want to grab food while hanging out, and it can be a difficult time trying to find somewhere to go that is vegan-friendly, so yeah, the topic of food is so common, you can't blame a vegan for saying that they're vegan when we talk about the subject of food on a daily basis.
Either way, I think I want to start eating meat again kind of, I do miss burgers, but the more I do research on stuff, the less appealing it really is, despite how good it may taste.
Yeah, whatever.

You mean in a few places in Europe? Cause some European countries treat livestock in an appalling manner.

That clearly. And also the biggest thing being that if you want to reduce suffering it's worst to eat plants and animals and least bad to eat just plants. I really don't understand how people don't see those two huge flaws with that retort but I suppose they are all equally stupid. The ONLY legitimate reason for eating meat is because you like to. The reasons for not eating it all make sense and they are healthy as or healthier for eating that way. People act like there are facts about it but really it's more opinion whether you think you should eat meat or not.

Once I went veg I thought I'd never go back ever. I was slowly worn down for years until after 8 I stopped. Living in Wisconsin was no help either. Everyone's a farmer and we love beer cheese and brats. I'm sure if I lived somewhere in California or something I'd still be going strong. But all the crap from people was giving me too much mental anguish. I still eat lots of stuff I ate as a vegan. I'm more of a social meat eater lol.
I think what annoys me the most about that is I AM QUIET. It was more that people figured out I didn't eat meat by noticing a pattern and questioning me about it. I never put anyone down for their diet or asked them about it. Just because I eat differently than you doesn't make it appropriate for you to interview me about it!

I wish those extremely militant kinds of vegans would realize that there's nothing wrong with eating meat. It's not immoral, nor is it unhealthy.

But...why eat meat and dairy if I can live perfectly fine and much live much cheaper without it?
Honestly? If it makes them happy, I'm in full support.
However, I don't necessarily agree with their logic. Studies suggest more and more that plants are complex beings, feeling pain and maybe even emotion. So the idea is essentially a more inclusive version of anti-cannibalism. We rule out beings even remotely similar to us, and only stop when they seem significantly different. It's racist, I tell you!
But in all seriousness, we have to get sustenance somehow, which means something will always die for the well being of another. At this point, we've created an equilibrium, and it would be illogical to try and alter it. We'll only disrupt the food web.
Also, in the realm of things such as bovine milk: I've noticed a number of vegans claiming that cows only need to produce excess milk because cultivators artificially inseminate them. But this is completely unfounded. It's true that farmers attempt to hasten the process by which the milk is created, but cows produce milk whether its for offspring or not.
This was probably due to domestication, I will admit, but its an irreversible evolutionary process.
Ultimately, I really don't agree with the vegan lifestyle in particular, but I have no issue with either persuasion.
Like I said, if it makes you happy, and no one is harmed... All the power to you.
All I ask is that you respect that your belief system is simply that, as is mine. It is not inherently wrong to eat meat. It's in our nature. Defy it if you will, but do not condemn me for it.

Woah wait what??? I'm all for small farm and local stuff. Factory farms suck. But even putting that aside WHAT?? How the whatssss got a link or something I'm so confused.
Mammals produce milk for their young. Dairy cows are bred, their calves go on to be made into veal or future dairy cows and their milking time is prolonged for human consumption rather than giving it to their own calves.

Here's my opinion: If I know you're a vegetarian or vegan and I know this for any reason other than me going to get you something with meat in it and you politely declining, odds are you're a fucking cunt

Yes, I feel empathy and therefore guilt when causing harm to things with a central nervous system. Do you not? Then we have a problem. Is it ok to torture and kill things with central nervous systems? Is pulling a dog's leg off the same as pulling a leaf off a tree?

No, you are a moron. I support animal testing for medical purposes because humans are more important than animals.

well my thoughts on killing things dont really come because they have a central nervous system, i just dont feel good taking away someone's life. if i asked someone why they think killing is wrong id expect something about the harm and grief they'd cause to that person's family and the fact that they cant enjoy life anymore, not something about central nervous systems. and no, pulling a leg off a tree isn the same, but taking down a tree probably has more impact overall than putting down a dog

yet at the same time they're probably eating fruits/vegetables that came from exploited labour forces, for example, like from mexico, or have been genetically modified to grow faster. And how do you think we have the land to grow food in some areas... Someone had to deforest something to make room for that land, in some cases. It's not really a completely honest industry, with of course some obvious exceptions.
They're just like those Christians who goes door to door to promote their religion.
