Loads of options.
Traditional materials- just about anything. Acrylic paint might be most fun to start with. To document your work afterward, look here.

For digital stuff, try this list of programs. Most serious digital artists will eventually acquire a tablet, so i recommend wacom as a brand for if you're ready to commit that much money to the endeavor. Wacom Bamboos make for the best starter tablets, as far as I can tell.

Im going to go out on a limb here and guess what you mean by 'cool abstract art'

You want;
Alchemy
Apophysis
Flame Painter
Harmony

Why? They require the least amount of skill and effort in order to make 'cool abstract art'

I think ornery is going way too deep , dude he is just a beginner.
Use
Photoshop CS5 Raster software <the more you zoom in the more it gets pixelated>
Corel Draw (Vector software) Image remains intacty even if u zoom in at maximum
and if you have plans to buy a pentablet
you may use
Autodesk Sketch book pro
