In an area of Ethiopia where the literacy tests would average ZERO, some kids were given tablets with ZERO instructions...
And in 5 months were teaching themselves English and how to hack.
Wow.

Hasn't it been a longtime stereotype that all those phishing e-mails come from Ethiopians?

Maybe not hacking, but computer fraud is pretty big in some parts of Africa.

It made more sense in my head.

Very intriguing...the question now is, how will this affect the way we educate our own society?

"OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte"
With a name like that, you can bet he'd be the founder of the OLPC.

See, this is what charity needs to be. Instead of chucking money or food at the poor population and solving their temporary issues, we should be giving them long-term resources that would make a monumental difference in that society. This is not to say that donating money or food is bad, but we should definitely focus our efforts into making greater changes.

Even the most righteous, logically sound individuals are subject to poor reasoning skills and deluded mindsets.

Tablets arent exactly high tech, they are just a big smartphone with less features, no calling and worse specs. When tablets start being regularly released with proper operating systems and good specs I will agree.

The analogy is not disproven.

That's because these kids know that learning means opportunity. They put a LOT of value on learning, unlike most kids in America and the UK. The work ethic and drive that kids in poverty have is absolutely astonishing. I'm not at all surprised by their pace.

Isn't it great when children actually want to learn and put in the effort to get the most benefit? Rather than whining about having to go to lessons and schools.
