Good. God. I miss this show. Like Sliders and Spectacular Spiderman, this show will hold a special place in my heart until the day I die. It may seem cheesy to you, but this was one of the many decent examples of good writing, drama, and action in an animated series when I was a kid. Shows like this among Gargoyles, Justice League, Samurai Jack.

Reboot used to come on Cartoon Network. It was a Canadian-animated series that I saw alongside another show called Max Steel (which, ironically enough, has gotten a recent, anime reboot). The show was about the adventures of a group of characters based off of humanized computer programs. The main character, Bob, was a security program "downloaded" or "uploaded" to the city of "Mainframe" which was basically a virtual simulation of what was going on inside of your computer.

Time was regulated to "nano seconds" and jokingly a "second" whenever something was going to take a very long time. The antagonists were two viruses by the names of Megabyte and Hexadecimal; Megabyte was a virus who had a very menacing, yet sophisticated air to him, who sought domination and control over Mainframe and did so by way of very complex plots, whereas Hexadecimal was a super-virus whose power created her very erratic personality - one moment she would want to destroy Mainframe, and the next she was trying to woo Bob into loving her.

The first season was sort of what you'd expected from a children's animated series, very comical, very surreal, yet the animation at the time, so I've read, was very cutting-edge. In fact, when the video game came out, the animation for the cutscenes was identical to the animation used in the show - it was just that good at the time (compare the animation you see in the Naruto anime to what you see in Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3).

The second season is where it got good for those who can't stand regular television shows. Character backgrounds were explored, new characters and threats were introduced, the scale of Megabyte and Hexadecimal's plot grew in their significance, Bob and his friends Dot, Enzo, and Phong were faced with challenge after challenge... and for those who haven't watched the series but are starting to get interested, I won't ruin how Season 2 ends, but I'll say that it changes the scope of the show considerably. Imagine watching Spongebob and then changing the channel over to Battlestar Galactica or Exosquad.

The show went from this intro in Season 1 to this one in Season 3. Yeah, it was a pretty big shift.

Anywho, so Reboot was sort of 'canceled' or 'delayed' after its fourth season, which was after Cartoon Network dropped the show for being too 'dark' (I presume). Instead, the makers found a way to produce the fourth season into two or three movies that allowed them to increase the elements of the show that were previously frowned upon by Cartoon Network. However, the show ended on, gasp...

a cliffhanger

A cliffhanger that remained famously unresolved even to this day. The fans were so bent by this that petitions were made to have it revived, and lo and behold, the makers of Reboot actually paid attention and started plans to revive the show. They had a website, a comic they used to expand on some of the show's mythology, and there was an announcement of three films that would continue the story from where the show left off. There was even some teaser footage of a redesigned character on the web awhile ago.

That said, nothing, to my knowledge, has come of it since. Most shows I know of that have been out of the spotlight this long are considered dead and buried.

Yeah they really got sidetracked in season3 when the show became serious instead of being about games and all their funny references.

Some of the references in that show flew way over kid's heads. William Shatner, YMCA, Elvira, Mad Max, Evil Dead... :p
The Mad Max episode was one of my favorites as a kid though.

The show just became less interesting for kids when it started being a story you'd have to follow from episode to episode. When I was young, I never knew when things would be on air and every show that was a continuous story was impossible to follow because most of what you'd see would be reruns of them in the wrong order. It's better suited for adults or stupid-ass anime like DragonBallZ that take so long to tell any story that you can miss 10 shows and still be in the loop as to what's going on. Spoiler: They're still fighting.

This show looks like an amateur animation by a college student. I can't believe this was once cutting edge. I never watched the show as a kid because I had pretentious tastes. I'll have to find a copy of the series to watch now.

I never really watched it regularly, but I enjoyed it when I did watch.

There definitely was a huge tonal shift later on.

Megabyte really was a boss villain.

He had that great Tony Jay voice.

if they "reboot it" nowadays, they should rename him something like "terabyte" or he'll be a wimp

It hasn't aged that well in it's original run after watching the first episode recently The polygons weren't the issue but was obviously more for kids and tech geeks

Even though I didn't watch this show that much. But dam, that was a good show anyway.

The comic did try to get very philosophical in the end, I'm very optimistic for this reboot of Reboot.

I remember renting the ReBoot game for the Playstation.

One of the best shows I watched growing up. It would be my whole family sitting down and watching it whenever it was on.

My dad's a massive fan, and had a job interview with Mainframe at one point, so yeah. He went to FanExpo and got Bob's autograph and whatnot.

good times. Especially with broken action figures and ones imported in that had the stupidest looking painted-on faces.

This is for me one of those shows I hadn't thought of in years, but I remember seeing it as a kid, and thinking how cool it was. Megabyte's voice actor was awesome- it gave him that sense of dominion and control he wanted to install (no pun intended) on Mainframe.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. :p 1994, what can I say? Reboot was the pioneer of CGI-animated television series.

You can buy the DVDs or search for the episodes online. I might recommend that you start with the Season 2 episodes, because as I said, in my opinion, that's when the plot starts to get serious, but if you want the full scope of the show and some childish antics, Season 1 sets the stages and shows just how much character development occurs in later seasons.

If you're very skeptical, yeah, the animation's not 'fantastic' by today's standard, and a lot of the jokes may fly over most of our heads due to the time period. Again, start with Season 2.

In the final season, Megabyte was upgraded (or 'corrupted') into a Trojan Horse Virus. He was able to duplicate the form of any sprite or program.

It would be a little odd to translate 1990's tech and pop culture gags to 2013, but hey, Tron: Uprising pulled off their retro humor pretty well once the original Kevin Flynn made his appearance.

I'm going to have to look it up again. I remember the story being about some antivirus that was able to turn all the viruses into Scientologists (hardy har har) or somethign like that; but I had a hard time accessing the site the comic was on.

I never played it but I really wanted to when I saw the cheat codes for it on on my Action Replay discs. I imagine it would be something like playing the original Tomb Raider on PS1.

Beast Wars, I knew there was another CGI series I wanted to mention in my first post. That show absorbed me with characters like Dinobot, who had possibly one of the most dynamic inner conflicts I've ever seen written into a cartoon.

They were probably from the same year. Still, Max Steel was like crack to me before I started on DBZ. Used to come on half an hour before I went to school and it would come on a little before Reboot.

Ha, that's more than enough. I remember catching up on a number of episodes on Youtube myself years back, and the most I could remember from the show was a scene from Season 4 and how Bob became Glitch Bob. I was blown away by what the storyline was really like and just how many episodes I had missed on Toonami.

Tony Jay and the voice actor for Uncle Iroh/Aku will be dearly missed.

My favorite part of Reboot is the fantastic CGI.

I mean, I remember this show. Sort of.

I never watched it fully, I found the animation to be way to cheesy, and strange at the time when it was airing on cartoon network. I saw bits and pieces of it inbetween when I wanted to watch "better" shows between CN and Nickelodeon. I remember megabyte by his appearance in an instant but overall, it was a really weird show for me. Maybe I was just to young to appreciate it.

Threads like this almost always end up with me going and re-starting the process of watching an old show.
