I need to make a one of a young man who gradually gets older by walking. So I thought it would be easier to make a wire frame model first animate it then trace it.
Or is there a simple way which doesn't involve frame by frame free hand?

When rotoscoping it tends to be freehand. If you animate your 3d character walking on the spot though and have the camera in a profile view you should be able to create elements/symbols of the characters head, hands, arms, body etc and tween them in time. But the rigidness of tweening makes the concept of doing it in 3d first somewhat redundant. Only do it in 3d first if you have a shot which is really hard to do, and you need a 3rd dimension to help you draw your perspective.
