I read Ebert's last blog post this morning while at work, where he mainly talked about how his cancer had returned. As a result, he planned on slowing down and only reviewing movies that he wanted to see, while his other hand-picked critics took on everything else. It was a "leave of presence" that never really got to happen...for long.
He had a infectious and genuine love for movies in general, except when they sucked in his point of view. All my life, since I was a little kid, he was the only professional movie critic whose opinions I took seriously. I disagreed with many of his film assessments (I remember how surprised I was when he gave Gladiator a thumbs down almost 13 years ago) while also agreeing with many others. His writing was very clear, thoughtful and engaging, and I could always see where he was coming from. I also read his blog and tweets regularly. So yeah...although I knew this day would come, I was hoping it wouldn't be this soon.
