Tesco crossed a line! Apr. 3rd, 2013 @ 10:03 AM Reply

So a while back people were kicking up a fuss about there being horse meat in some of Tesco's meat products. In honesty, I couldn't have cared less about that. If I'm quite happy to eat a cow, pig or chicken then I don't see why eating horse meat would be any different. I understand that some people might be upset when they discovered that what they thought was a beef burger actually wasn't.

However, this time Tesco have crossed a line. I was drinking a can of their own brand cola. Tesco's own brand cola has a bit of a... unique taste but it makes a nice change on occasion. Intrigued to see what causes this "unique" flavour, I decided to have a look at the ingredients. What I found shocked me.

They list apple and carrot as ingredients! What's that about?! I'm not drinking cola to get two of my five a day. I'm drinking cola because it's unhealthy and delicious. Now every time I drink Tesco's own brand cola I can't help but notice a strange flavour that I think is the carrot. I'll never be able to look at this drink in the same way again. I feel betrayed, Tesco!

Found any ingredients that seem out of place lately?

Tesco are too cheap to squeeze out cola juice from cola berries.

There's a furor going on in Canada about Kraft dinner using an unneeded dye just to make the product more colorful. But I don't like Kraft dinner. The cheese has the consistency of paste.

The apple I can understand, but carrot? What's that about? Carrot should only be used to make carrot cake or for feeding to rabbits. I don't want that shit in my cola. Now the inside of my mouth tastes like carrot!

You can actually taste the vegetables quite a bit in diet versions sometimes, not that its a bad thing. Vegetables taste nice.

And I here I thought cola only contained sugar and fizzy brown water. Guess you learn something new every day.

Apple's not bad, I can see myself being curious enough to try something labelled "apple cola" but carrot would certainly put me off.

Wild boar in the game casserole mum's making for tea. Thought that was a bit unusual but I don't know. I appreciated the attempt to open the thread up to wider discussion though.

Boar's a fine meat. At least I recognized everything in the ingredient list, the same can't be said for most US soft drinks... in fruit drinks, they use dead bugs from South America to color them :P Just had to lol at the "Caution: Pressurized container, open with care"! Talk about a nanny state.....

It's actually not too bad, especially given the price difference between this and the likes of Coke or Pepsi. But now that I'm aware of the carrots, I don't think I'll be drinking it any more.

Better yet, get the job and stick with them until you're promoted to whatever position is responsible for their cola production. Then remove the carrots!

Dean, if you thought that'd ruin your day, the fact that vanilla extract is made from concentrated anal beaver juice overshadows this fact by a mile.

I think most soft drinks contain some kind of root extract, usually burdock. They definitely put orange juice in most brands, too. What you really gotta worry about is the citric acid, and leaving that crap on your teeth when you sleep. It will literally melt your teeth away if you keep it up for years. I just had to get a filling, and I think I can trace that directly to years of sipping Coke at night and not cleaning my teeth before bed, so be careful :-)

I don't understand Dean..

You're ok eating mislabeled meat products with horse in it because you know meat is meat is meat, but you don't want to drink a beverage anymore that you like just because you bothered to read the label and see that it has a little bit of carrot concentrate? If you like carrots then your decision to quit this drink is even more baffling to me.
