The more popular ones among gamers:
Final Fantasy (I don't care how much people hate the XIII series, there's no way you can't say it has a great soundtrack)
Kingdom Hearts
The Legend of Zelda (Twilight Princess being my personal favorite)
Pokemon

The underrated ones:
Mario and Luigi (Superstar Saga, Partners in Time, and Bowser's Inside Story)
Megaman Zero (number 4 especially, and the official remixes are beyond amazing)
Okami <-- this one especially

Any songwriter could learn a thing or two from that guys soundtracks.

And the man himself. Great guy. :)

I'm a bit partial to the Assassin's Creed sound, and the Bioshock scores are insane! I'm a bit biased on both counts though. ;)

Other than that, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is kickass, as well as the stuff that guys like Neal Acree and Jack Wall come out with.

I feel like my taste was influenced by soundtracks from games like maplestory, earthbound, and ocarina of time.

I can't believe this thread has gone on for more than 30 posts without a single mention of the actual greatest game soundtrack of all time, Chrono Cross.

Go ahead, listen to that song. Try to tell me it's not the greatest song composed for a game ever.

For me the most influential game soundtracks have come from the Halo games, Marty O'Donnell is a seriously talented composer and has made some of the most iconic themes in video game history. The new composer is pretty good too, Neil Davidge has really captured the sounds of a sci-fi setting in music form with some stunning soundtracks that merge classical and electronic sounds together flawlessly.

Also Sonic the Hedgehog soundtracks, gotta go fast.

Mario 1-5 (especially 4), Zelda 1-4 (especially 3), Final Fantasy 1-9 (haven't played 2, 3 or 5 yet), Dragon Quest 1-6 (haven't finished any but am familiar with the soundtracks).

Sonic CD (JP) is definately one of them for me. Another is Marvel Vs Capcom 2. Can't forget Metroid Prime and Super Metroid. Not to mention Megaman Network Transmission Sonic Adventure 2. Jet Set Radio is now one of them. Mario and Luigi Super Star Saga and Sonic Advance.

These influence my style the most. Love these.

I think I'm gonna cry. Anybody got a tissue?
