The only successful cartoons in the states are comedy while anime is more open minded to all genres inc. comedy and other things
Then why do good comedy series, like cromartie high, only last a short time?

You better die a good comedy series, than live long enough to see yourself become Strange Dawn.

It's true that in Japanese the word anime refers to all animation, but in English it's different, it only refers to Japanese animation. Just like the word "sake" in Japanese refers to all types of alcohol but in English it only means Japanese rice wine. In the context of English it would be incorrect to call all alcohol sake. The point is that even though a word is the same it can have different meanings in different languages.
Also anime is better than cartoons on the whole, since cartoons are pretty much just comedy and children's shows, whereas anime has a greater variety, and even the so called children's series that occur in anime and manga are often more comparable in terms of content to something like Lord of the rings or Star wars rather than western children's cartoons.

I think the problem is that some people think of a certain style when they say anime or cartoon. Like a cartoon in mindset may be something like Tom and Jerry and a true anime in mindset would be Gundam Wing or Naruto. In reality cartoons and anime are the same, it's one of those you say tomato I say tamato type of stuff.

So, I think it's a factor of whether you prefer to think or laugh.
Surely animated comedies are not the only thing that remains popular in the culture, there's got to be some more seriously stuff considering there's the like of the Batman animated series in the 90s

maybe american cartoon animation style more, depends who it is. With alot of anime movies I see alot more depth to stories etc. and from what ive seen the stories seem to be perhaps better. Or maybe I just watch sucky western cartoons. I like both alot tho.

Western animation is far superior.
For instance, in anime nearly everyone is an androgynous preteen. The plot stretches on for far too long and the characters are poorly defined (western film has this problem too [Christopher Nolan]). And of course the voice acting suuuuuuuucks.

Heavy Metal, Wizards, and Fire and Ice come to mind. Although, Heavy Metal was partially a comedy.

You've watched the wrong anime. That's your fault.

Disagree. I love those hips.
In Japan "anime" is actually a term used to describe all animation, not just Japanese. I'll probably say anime, though.
