The only difference between anime {Japan} and regular cartoons {everywhere else} is where they are made, everything else is secondary.

That said, I prefer anime over modern cartoons largely due to the fact that they are more diverse and generally steered to an older audience, at least in the western world.

i like anime but he is mostly right, one thing i criticize form it is bad regulation of power levels. for example, many times in their first apparitions some characters can destroy the world with a finger and in the following episodes cant even fart without tearing their own asses (ex: pikachu, oxigen qwaser, etc, etc)

you can't even compare cartoons & anime since cartoons are cheap thrills for kids whilst anime is the pinnacle of contemporary art. a perfect fusion of graphical, cultural & auditory impressions. it is the ultimate way to express & convey emotion . . . cartoons are just meant as a way for negligent parents to babysit their children

I actually like both anime and cartoons. But some people in this thread has made some good points about both.

Neither, the anime stylization is derived from Disney and Betty Boop cartoons so they're essentially the same.

Look up Osamu Tezuka if you don't believe me.

i like to keep it varied, else it gets boring, ecchi, romance, shounen and hentai every other day.
what i mean is, i like it, but i know its not perfect and that it can be criticized

For me it has to be cartoons. Anime can be good, but the majority of them are just lesser versions of the more popular ones.

Anime is still just a subcategory of cartoons/animation.

Anime is actually just a category of cartoon, but when comparing the two, I find series that I love from both western and eastern studios, so it's hard for me to say, really.

In the states, animated comedy-sitcom series are the most successful, while in japan, action-adventure series seem to last longer.

So, I think it's a factor of whether you prefer to think or laugh.

Actually Soul Eater's one of the better animes to come out in recent years

I grew to hate most of the character types that were introduced from highscool of the dead after the first episode most particularly Shizuka & Saya
