So MSN is dying... Mar. 19th, 2013 @ 11:28 AM Reply

... Or "Windows Live Messenger", if you prefer. That's it, guys. The 8th of April 2013. It's been a long run, and a fun one too, I might add. I may not have had it from the very start, since I was only 3 when it came out in 1995, but hey. 2004-2013 isn't a bad leap.

I, for one, am definitely going to miss it. Anyone know any non-skype alternatives?

I'd like to be able to keep the double-cam situation going without it fucking up too hard.

Just use Skype. It lets you transfer over all your contacts and shit, even if the other person is still using MSN you can talk to them with Skype.

I thought it died for a long time ago and the majority of the userbase had already switched over to Skype.

I personally have never tried Skype. I use something called Electronic Mail. It's pretty awesome.

I already use Skype and have for many years, it's totally fine and I love it. I use it daily, in fact. The only issue I have with it is that I have to pay actual money for being able to use my webcam with one person in a call, while also talking to someone else.
Not that MSN had that feature, but it was wonderful running them alongside one another. I'll def miss that.

This.

I don't see any problem with AIM it still works as good as ever. MSN always felt clunky to me anyway and I haven't used it in years.

Jitsi is a good alternative. It has almost everything Skype has. Tinychat is for minimalistic use.

I've been meaning to go on AIM for awhile but keep forgetting to do so.
Even if I did I doubt I'd even use it. Thats kinda what happened when I got on MSN. But I only had one person in my contacts and then that person deleted me so I never used it again.

Yeah I never liked the feel of MSN and Skype feels messy to me when I open it and it tries to turn text in my browser into links to make Skypecalls, which is a huge turnoff. I was really pleased to receive a notice from Chrome that they disabled Skype's latest attempt to do that.

Tinychat seems to be all in a website, so I'm not gonna use that. But Jitsi looks pretty neat.

MSN was a mess and Skype is a resource hog! I like Yahoo or google's messengers. I am amazed that AIM still exists, but people still use it and it seems to be OK. I think Microsoft is trying to rearrange and merge a lot of different things to rework some money from failed and less successful endeavors.

Skype is perfect for my daily use. I wouldn't want it any different.

The only problem is if Skype reaches some kind of monopoly on IM software

I know how you feel. Both of those are the main reasons as to why I deliberately use an older version of skype. Another would be the fact that you have a volume-slider for the entire call in the call-interface itself, rather than having to go into the settings to fiddle with it. Some people are just louder than others, so it's better to be able adjust that on the fly.

Skype made some mistakes like that, removing tools that were handy and changing the interface completely with every semi-annual major update. That's why I stopped updating it in 2010. All-in-all, it's still a really good program, though. I recommend oldapps.com for a proper version.

I've always liked AIM the best because it's been reliable all these years. I also never use the AOL IM software as there are many alternative that work with AIM, like Trillian.

I'm going to keep using MSN till its last day. I'll be using Skype when MSN's gone, but I sure am going to miss custom emoticons. Also Skype has this terrible habit of only being able to send an offline message to someone if you're still online when s/he signs back in.

I think that I am one of the few people in the world that has never signed up or used MSN. I remember it being really big a few years back but I never had the Internet so it was something that passed me by. Like Stickam (which I had but never really used) it's not something I'm going to miss.

It looks like IM clients are being replaced by social communities built-in messaging systems mostly, like FB, that one specifically probably chased a lot of people away from the old services. Personally I'm sticking to NGPM for all IM usage exclusive. :)

Very easy to hack someone through Skype.

I'm not sure I actually believe this but even if it is, just don't add a bunch of strangers. I don't think the point of Skype is to meet new people.

Is dying?

I thought MSN was in its death throes five years ago.
