So there's a new Pope, Francis I.
I don't really see how the new one is going to be much different from the previous one, apart from the fact that he's from South America, the first non-European pope in several hundred years. At a glance, he seems like a fairly "establishment" kind of candidate, meaning he supports most of the current Catholic doctrine and is unlikely to rock the boat much while he's in office.
So what do we think of this guy?

I think I couldn't care any less because it's not as if anything he does is going to affect me anyway.
Seriously, who even reads these things anymore?

He's a Jesuit Catholic, the first Jesuit to be a Pope.

Correction, he's the first non-European Pope EVER.

He's actually pretty well-known as a reformer, and apparently that was one of the primary reasons why the conclave chose him.
Just thought that I'd point out those details first...

2) Pope Saint Evaristus: Bethlehem, modern-day West Bank (97 - 105)
3) Pope Saint Anicetus: Emesa (today known as Homs), Syria (155 - 166)
4) Pope Saint Victor I: Leptis Magna, modern-day Libya (189 - 199)
5) Pope Saint Miltiades: Somewhere in North Africa (311 - 314)
6) Pope Theodore I: Jerusalem, modern-day Israel (642 - 649)
7) Pope John V: Antioch, then Syria but today part of Turkey (685 - 686)
8) Pope Sisinnius: Syria (708)
9) Pope Constantine: Syria (708 - 715)
10) Pope Gregory III: Syria (731 - 741)
He is the first non-european Pope in 1,272 years, the 11th in total. He's the first one from the Americas though.
He's actually pretty well-known as a reformer, and apparently that was one of the primary reasons why the conclave chose him.
Really? In what areas has he been a reformer? Got any specific examples?

I'm properly chastised. I forgot about the Asian Popes (sorry I'm agnostic and don't study Catholic history lol). I'm not sure about Mitiades. But yeah, Francis 1 is the first new world Pope.

I watched his unveiling live on the news. Reports indicated he was instrumental in reforming the Argentinean church after the dictatorship, and being the first Jesuit Pope ever, he was elected in the hopes that he will propagate Jesuit values in pushing the Church forward in it's thinking. As opposed to the policies and methods of his predecessor Pope Benedict, which was a general lack of understanding or acceptance of modern-day issues.
he seems like a fairly "establishment" kind of candidate, meaning he supports most of the current Catholic doctrine and is unlikely to rock the boat much while he's in office.
Reports indicated that he differs in style from the other Cardinals in his day-to-day work, especially in the areas of luxuries and privileges. From what I was listening to, it sounded like the guy was more or less an outsider, not a groupie of the "establishment".
*shrugs*
let's see what he does I guess
lol why are the popes always being dressed like Liberace's stunt double? :P

This Pope Francis individual seems like one who work for the followers by the needs of the followers since the last Pope didn't do so well, one of those reasons is due to the sheer fact he treated the nuns as if they were stepping out of line.
Needless to say, the last Pope wasn't that much of an progressive individual but not necessarily throwing things out of the window either.
Even then the Catholic Church has a series of problems that just need to be dealt with, all I can say at this point is a number of things that need to be allowed to take place.
1: Let women become priestess of the church (they should be treated the same as men and that remained that way until Paul really mucked things up).
2: Allow priests and priestess to marry one-another.
3: Treat Religion as a Private Club and not as the Public Influence.
4: Expel those Priests that have been known to commit various crimes (keeping it as a secret to begin with long ago is a really bad idea).
If the Catholic Church refuses to make these changes, they will dissolve, and what dose this have to do with Lighten up, Francis? So he gets the message should he see this post.

Meh, I'm sad Mr. Dolan was not elected as pontiff.
I actually caught myself referring to him as Uncle Dolan rather than Pope Dolan in a random conversation today.
But anyway I'm an atheist so what he does won't directly impact itself on me.

I believe Dolan would need to be a Catholic to be Pope, sauce plox.

Oh I just looked up the name of the guy.
He's called Timothy Dolan.
He is a very jovial looking chap. I think he would've invigorated the Church through pure happiness.

I doubt that the progressives of the Catholic church will be very progressive at all by anyone else's standards.
I'd be happier if the church just collapsed but I can't care much either way.

According to this the 112th pope is the last pope and is called Peter.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes
One of the candidates to be pope was called Peter but he wasn't elected. It is possible he was usurped somehow, possibly unknowingly.
